Hi everyone,
I want to create better DJ mixes that feel more intentional, create energy curves and hopefully tell a story. Usually I just go by harmonic recommendations by Virtual DJ within specific folders of a genre and it seems to work for the most part, specially if I know the tracks well to keep the energy up. Sometimes tracks pop in my head mid set and they fit the key and certain elements to have a continious flow / energy as well, but sometimes I just get lost. Specially with the masses of tracks in existense.
Since there are additional options out there like Djoid and Mixed in Key, I was wondering how you guys feel about this, or what you might recommend? Im tempted to give Mixed in Key 11 Pro a try and hopefully have access to a better workflow to prepare sets in advance. Btw I gave Djoid a try, not impressed at all, had to open a case in PayPal to get my money back, not a single reply to emails, neither before or after purchasing. I hope they will fix this.
Maybe you guys have some advice in general how to properly do it within VDJ itself? The matching key sugesstions are always helpful and lately I started using the filter options to show me tracks +/- 3bpm, key +/- 1 and certain tags like #banger or whatever regardless of the genre.
Many thanks for your insights in advance <3

Hi Chris!
Very interesting......i had a discussion about this recently with a friend. He is still undecided about what software to use, and is currently trying everything out, despite my recommendation of VDJ....
Somehow; the more i read on these forums the more i am convinced we overthink and over complicate the art form of mixing blending scratching......most times the audience don't notice you ; its usually when you make a very obvious mistake...
The Audience just want to dance, and socialize ; enjoy themselves.......the music helps keep a vibe or flow....however you want to describe it......How many times do you get them standing there watching your every move?
What type of music do you play? That really determines your flexibility IMHO.....i play hip hop, dance, reggae, and soca, mostly old school; and anything else i find interesting that would make your feet tap.....i don't limit myself to any one type of music or era.....so i get really creative.....by today's standards i guess i would be labeled as an OPEN FORMAT dj.....??
I came out of the 1200s and vinyl golden days of the 80s, and so i went with DVS, as i am most comfortable on turntables.
TBH, all this talk about musical journeys and telling stories etc does not make sense to me.......but i respectfully acknowledge others swear by it....I just play to please the crowd and enjoy myself.
What works for me is investing time in finding good music, making a unique version, if possible, and using my decades of experience to find tracks that go well together....then create short playlists of say 15 minutes.....(the linked tracks feature is absolutely awesome!!)
Mixing wise i stick to a color filter of +/- 1 semitone and +/- 10% tempo.....that allows me to quickly change genres ....
VDJ opened up a world of creativity for me; i very often will do a remix of a song, if i really llike it.....because the stems, key, bpm, effects , etc offers so much options......i consider VDJ a production tool, and a very powerful one in the right hands.
But remember; once upon a time we didn't have software, and had to rely on our talent and skill to do that......so you ultimately get to determine things, not the software.
Anyways....maybe i gave you something to think about and open up a discussion.....maybe this was a long irrelevant rant...lol
Your journey as a DJ should always inspire you to be uniquely creative.....don't get too hung up on the tech....both hardware and software......but use them to your advantage....marketing is a bitch......

There are many features in VirtualDJ that, once used with some thought, can help you to select tracks.
You already named two - Hash Tags and Quick Filters.
There are also:
Everybody has a different style/technique they use with these tools to find the track that they want, but the point is it all starts with how well you prepare and organize your tracks for later use and how well you know your own system of organization to find tracks when you need them.
That will be different for everybody.
Automated tools can help, but they are no replacement for taking the time to do that well.
Look through the database features that VirtualDJ offers, then think about how you play and how you go about finding songs, and try to come up with a categorization + narrowing strategy based on that.
Then, stick to that:
If you do this right, you won't struggle to find tracks and won't need to resort to external tools to help.

- Color Rules or you can color tracks manually from the Tag Editor
- Filter Folders which you could make on the fly if necessary

I don't understand either why VDJ isnt more popular or more use it or at least give it a try, maybe Jazzy Jeff has to use some day ^^
I totally get what youre trying to say, but short version, started to mix 3 years ago, had Virtual DJ since 2010, used it for 3 days with a Hercules RMX 3 or something, got bored quick just pressed snyc used crossfader, recorded 3 sets and it was over.
Since then Im trying to get the most out of the hobby as possible. I tried different things, got 2 turntables last year, bought vinyl, ended up with timecode and love it to death.
Major problem is the amount of tracks that Ive collected over the years and it got worse with DJ Pools, you get the idea, and now here I am. I try to listen to music 24/7 and sort stuff properly, but I guess no matter how hard I try it will never be the same compared to record collections that grew over decades and the owners know everything in and out.
Thats why Im searching for ways to hopefully have a better workflow and get the results I want. Some sets I really like and its just happening, but I dont want to loose the flow while mixing. Some sets I listen to by others just blow my mind and it feels like its intentional what theyre doing, like proper intro, building energy, having a climax moment in the set and then say goodbye, this kind of thing. This is what I would love to approach, maybe with some tools along the way, since I wont be able to catch up with decades of experience.
To answer some of your questions, i like a lot of genres, right now its more on the Tech House side of things, but Electro and Detroit Techno is always presenst. Love Golden Era Hip Hip, I cant mix it yet though, House in a lot shapes and forms, Breakbeats and a lot more. And I love to switch genres while mixing as well.
What is the linked feature you mentioned? I clicked on this couple of days ago because I thought the transition was awesome, where can I find these 2 again? I will look it up :-)
And again I totally understand your point, wish I wouldve started decades ago, I love to play vinyl, it feels different, like the real deal, but I stopped buying records lately, it kinda got out of hand. If my wife finds ever finds out how much I spent Im in trouble! But I dont have 5% of what I would love to have and might never get my hands on, without breaking the bank. So, digital has to do for now.

Colors I use as well and filter folders I started using like a week ago or so, wish I wouldve looked into it sooner.
Have you ever used Mixed in Key for the preperation of the tracks? It seems like you can listen to transitions quick and get recommendation based of key or camelot wheel mixing? Basically what VDJ has on board as well, I love this feature that VDJ shows the matching and relative keys.
This is what Im doing like you said for a couple of weeks now, I put new tracks into the main genre folders, give them a color and tags, but the problem is the 1000s of tracks that never had a proper listen and I was wondering if Mixed in Key for instance could help with that. But youre right, maybe everyhing is possible withing VDJ with a proper filter system.
So far I end up with the same tracks I already know in and out when I look at the filter recommendations. But this might be just me of course. Maybe its wishful thinking that Mixed in Key or any other tool will spark some new ideas.

responding to your reply in no set order....
i use the linked tracks function because i find it very convenient......when i am playing a track; i will try other tracks with it as i mix......those that flow really smooth, i drag them over to the linked tracks pane on the right......everything you link will be forward or backward compatible, and will show up in the linked tracks pane when next you are playing the track you were linking files to.......linking is a drag and drop action.
of course i do the above at home as i am compiling my music!!
it takes time, but gets you prepared to be flexible when playing live.
Careful who you listen to, a lot of youtube dj's practice their routines before they record it, not that anything is wrong with that; but why try to be the next jazzy jeff or whoever....just be yourself bro!
I use a P32 Hercules DJ controller with an innofader i installed; and custom mapped it to my liking.....for me its the best of both worlds; digital controller and analog turntables....i really don't need all the fancy gear....
camelot mixing is certainly helpful, i use it to assist in my selections.
sounds like you have a huge library; but i suspect you will never have enough music....lol
at one point i had around 60,000 digital tracks; including albums......i too became bored....and one day i hit delete and walked away for some years......now i try to keep it simple; im not commercial; i don't have to please everybody....this is my hobby,, and i enjoy using the tech and making it work for me.
in terms of practicing; i don't play music every day, and when i do; it could be 20 minutes or 2 hours; it all depends on how its flowing for me that day.......i have noticed my scratching ( i love scratch mixing the most) is getting better with this approach, because i no longer over think it, and happily switch off if i feel like i had enough.
i often watch my vinyl collection now and think about the money i spent......but those were the days.....now there are too many easy options.....i get what you're saying about the wife....lol
How long do you think it will take for you to get it right?......and who says you are getting it wrong??
have fun bro

Damn I wish I wouldve known about the linked feature sooner... But I will use it from now on, even the history will be very helpful. Thank for pointing me in that direction :-)
Which mixer do you use with the P32? I like Hercules a lot, had an Inpulse 500 3 years ago, solid piece of gear.
Library is too big for sure, I hope I can trim it down to 5000 tops at some point, too many track that will never get played anyways. 60k sounds insane though ngl ^^

@all Thanks for your time to reply and sparking new ideas, your time is highly appreciated and I hope I will be able to make good use of the suggestions.
I got a license for Mixed in Key 11 Pro and I must admit the workflow isnt bad at all at first glance, I prepped a set this morning, took me more than an hour for 17 tracks, but I feel confident this could be something good, since the transitions will work out, at least to my ears.
Sometimes when mixing I feel like the energy gets lost, if certain groove elements just stop when the new song fully drops and with Mixed in Key it was a breeze to crossfade the 2 tracks and have a proper listen how well the tracks connect, without looping the outgoing track for ages. Of course its all doable in VDJ alone somehow, but this seems like a way faster workflow.
5 out of the 17 tracks I never had a listen to or tagged them in VDJ, this is what I was hopeing for, finding new tracks in the library that will mix well, fresh ideas.
