I have a Macbook Pro 15" i7 with 16gb memory and a 750gb hard drive. I am very happy with this machine but I want more storage on board. My 750gb is getting pretty filled up and I don't want to use my external HD's.
I really like everything local on the computer.
I am looking into expanding the storage by both adding a 1tb HD where the optical bay is and also replacing the existing HD with a 1.5tb.
The things to think about with this set up is...
1.5tb HD is 5400rpm. Most 1tb HD's are also 5400rpm but I can get it with 7200rpm.
I think I would need to have both HD's have the same spin speed so I would be looking at 5400's.
The other thing I could do is chop 500gb's and simply go with two 1tb HD's at 7200rpm's
I really wanted a 3tb HD but the 1.5tb won't fit in the optical bay so i'm stuck with either 2tb or 2.5tb
I know that we have computer gurus on the boards here so I am asking for a conversation about internal storage and my ideas.
Please advise.

I'm pretty sure a 2 or 2.5 tb will not fit. If you've found one Please post a link.

Well faster is better, but 5400 is sufficient for storage. I have an external USB 3.0 2.5" drive but really miss my music being on the internal drive. Sometimes it just does "weird stuff" when loading a HD video.

They all fit.
The 1.5 only fits in the HD bay where the 1tb's fit in the optical bay as well.

I was talking about TOTAL HD space.
1tb HD = 1tb HD = 2tb storage
1tb HD + 1.5tb HD = 2.5tb storage

i'm also looking at the hybrid seagate but it's only 1tb. That would leave room for only a 1tb for the optical bay.
huey, the HD you showed me is NICE!!!
I may wait till it's available.
That HD would solve my issues as far as having 3tb of storage but still leaves the 5400rpm issue.

I don't really think you'll see much difference between today's 5400 vs the 7200's.

Access time will be better for videos at 7200rpm, but if you're doing audio files only then 5400rpm will be fine for second drive, but advise your drive C:\ to be 7200rpm. Another thing use Only top of the line drives period, Hitachi and others, also you should make a partition on your C:\ drive for os and programs Only..
You do Karaoke shows so another option is to put all your karaoke files into an external drive and use when needed..., but make sure it's 7200rpm

I tried looking for both of the 1.5tb drives and couldn't see them for sale anywhere in the UK.

Joey I highly doubt you can see a difference between the two, Maybe some years ago but now I don't really think so.

Be very careful. These bigger drives are thicker. Most laptops can handle the 9.5mm drives, but the 12.5mm and 15mm drives can be a problem.
I just bought a HP dv7tqe 7000 and while studying the PDF, I made sure I checked how big of drives it can handle. It is limited to 12.5mm. So I don't think I can put in a 15mm drive. Doubt I could get the cover back on.
I built it with a 340 Gig motherboard mounted mSATA for the C drive. A hybrid 1 TB drive in slot 1, and a standard mechanical 1TB drive in slot 2. It's pretty awesome to have 3 hard drives. I do video and the drives fill up q;uick even with MP4s.
Use caution. Good luck.

...On a busy night you'll feel the difference when your running a lot of things together..

7200 rpm drives run hotter and use more battery, i feel, (my opinion only) the extra heat from the 2nd hard drive can cause problems. I know 3 people who have removed the optical drive from their macs and replaced with large hard drives, 2 of the 3 friends that did both had problems with the drives going bad. May have been a coincidence but i dont want to chance it. as much as I hate it I carry an external drive for my video and keep all of my music on the laptop hard drive.

Wow Huey, it had me going there for a minute till I reached this paragraph;
Adaptive Thermal Protection
Greater thermal management enables the Crucial M500 to work with the host computer to dynamically adjust power consumption based on usage demands, which helps address the cooling challenges of ultra-small, thermally constrained systems. ):?

I looked at that and I like it a lot but the $1200 price tag for two of them puts it outside my reach.

My choice is made.
I will be upgrading my Macbook to 2TB storage, 7200rpm, 32mb cache.
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/HGST/0J22423/
This one will go in the main bay because it is SATA 3
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/HGST/0J22423S2/
This one will go in the optical bay because it is SATA 2
Wish me luck.
Anyone know if I will run into any issues with a 23mb cache?

Don't think you'll have any problems. Might just have to follow suit, lol!
