I know that there are programs like mp3gain to normalize the audio in mp3's, but what about mp4 videos? This is where I am having the biggest problem.

soooo, Am I the only person having this problem?

I've seen this issue with "store bought" consumer DVD's and normally what I do is replace the sound track with a .wav file of the song. It's not a simple "point & click" process but the results are worth the effort.
When I need to edit an audio stream I use Sony Vegas.

I guess you already know this, but don't forget you can set the vdj auto gain feature to "auto+remember" then hopefully the software should adjust the volume for you, but if it's not right then you can alter the gain in vdj and it will remember your setting for next time you play the song.

The auto gain works great with mp3's, but it just does not seem to work as well with the mp4's, but I forgot it has the remember feature.

I have been looking for an application to do this since 2003 or so... no lie. It does not exist. Ultimately, I want an app that can alter the volume tag within the mov, m4v or mp4, have batch processing capability, and use the excellent replaygain algorithm. However, I am not even sure VDJ supports the volume tag within the video, or just uses it's own variable within the VDJ database. It's been a year since I last looked, maybe it is time to search again.

If you find something let me know because I have not yet. lol

I've never used mp3gain, will it do my 18,000 mp3 collection at once? and How long wiould that take? Could there be any reason not to use it? Is there any chance it will mess up any tracks? I use auto/remember with automix single side. I have a problem with sound jumping at the end of the new track as it mixes to a older or quieter track. While both tracks play together for a second or two they both get the volume raise (or lower). With my 4,000 watt system this makes people fall off their chair! I see the most difference playing videos. They seem to have a wider recording volume level.

mpTrim PRO - good program to normalize mp3 files. I used it many times on my collection and it didn't spoil a single file.

Looks like a decent program. I think I might give it a try, although a lot of my collection is .VOB I still have many MP4's. I like the feature of clipping your videos, and it's not to pricey.

You should check which programm you use !
mp3gain is for free and can be restored to old values (when storage tags are not deleted)
mp3gain Pro - just the same name. Sometimes MP3s get broken and old values can't be restored !!!
Please refer here: http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/

Note about "Mp3Gain PRO"
The author of MP3Doctor recently renamed his "SuperMp3Normalizer" program to "Mp3Gain PRO". I did not write this new program, so please do not email me any support questions about it.
If you're interested, here are the main technical differences between "Mp3Gain PRO" and my, uh, "classic"(?) MP3Gain:
* "Mp3Gain PRO" does volume normalization inside the mp3, not just between separate mp3s. So if you feel a song is too quiet at the beginning (or middle, or end), then it can boost the volume just for that part. Pretty cool, if that's what you need.
* The changes "Mp3Gain PRO" makes are not undo-able. In order to make its fine-tuned adjustments, it must re-encode the mp3 file.
Anyhow, check it out if you're interested. But don't ask me any questions ;)

I've been using AACgain for couple of years and it works perfect for mp4 that use both AAC and mp3 audio embedded in mp4, as well as mp3, m4a(AAC) files. It works with the MP3Gain GUI, which is very nice.
http://altosdesign.com/aacgain/
I used it with over 1000 mp4 music videos. Every once and a while (1/200 times) it will stumble; if mp4 doesn't have mp3 or aac formated audio or if if mp4 container is corrupted or badly formed (easily fixed if you know how to copy avc video and audio file to new mp4 container, or worsee case re-encode). when it stumbles is sort pauses, I never-never had it corrupt a file, and I used it over 3000 mp3s.
The one thing I like about AACGain(and mp3gain), is that the do not rely on tags to enforce normalization or re-encode, instead the updates the block data in the audio file (sort of reference number for what volume should be in blocks of the tracks). This also makes fairly fast. Now it does store the analysis and gain changed in tags(APE), in this way it always reverse itself and can be used universally because it does not rely on audio device to use gain data in tags.
