Tried mp4 gain but there seems to be know way of knowing what db your "normalizing" your mp4's to.

On normalizing: You get two types of normalizing. The one type detects the peak level of the audio inside the track and then determines how much gain should be applied to the peak to get it to the maximum level (0dB) and then applies that exact same amount of gain to the entire track - this is what you want - the result is the same as when you turn the volume knob to raise the volume level.

The other very bad normalizing you get is where the softer parts in a track are amplified more than the louder parts – most of the time the louder parts are suppressed as well. The effect is almost the same as with the old tape recorders with ALC (auto level control) - some of the home use video cameras still makes used of it. The problem with this type of normalizing is that some instruments and/or vocals in certain parts of the track is meant to be softer and some instruments and/or vocals are meant to be louder - if you apply this bad kind of normalizing you distort and totally mess up the audio and the way the track is supposed to sound. You can usually notice this bad kind normalizing as soon as the bass in a track starts and on that first bass note it sounds as if it is suppressed or dampened - if you can hear that and it does not sound like that in the original track, then you know you have software making use of bad normalizing algorithms - it simply destroys what was good.

I'm not familiar with any of the applications referred to in this thread, because I prefer not to use such applications, but if you have to use it do a few tests first until you are certain that your application is using the proper normalizing algorithms.

Just my 2c.

Just to summarise the comments here - the free version aacgain is quite handy - you can use a front end like mp3gain-GUI. There is also a commercial software that handles the job well, called mp4gain. Thank you everyone in the thread who provided constructive input.
