You not only "can" play something again if it's something popular and you have a requests you SHOULD play it again. Just don't fall for the "I just got here and missed it" people who would have you play the same thing 20 minutes apart.

Just tell them it coming right up and with two 2 beers they will forget asking)

Yup, Renee nailed it!

I'd typically drop the top 10 twice within the space of a 5 hour gig.

Once as the club is filling up fast and people are getting their first impressions of the place, second time during the peak hour.

Well picked remixes enables you to get away with playing certain songs twice...

(so when will this thread be moved to the graveyard? Going on my logic this one is general enough to stay put, but the thread title kills it).

well i try not to repeat tunes but if there are requests i try to make it at least forty minutes between plays (if not longer) but sometimes who and how it was requested may get it on quicker... lol

Remixes or mashups definitely work when having to play the same song more than once.

ill play it 2-3 hours later from the first time i played it.

yes, as a matter of act if you are on the radio a Scottsdale Dj you can play it every 55 minutes!

Seriously, what rene said.

Riverside & L.A. radio DJs do that too, right, like every 55 mins! That's why listen to Sirius Satellite, I hear music sometimes weeks or even months before it gets local airplay, then I get frustrated trying to locate it for my own sets, lol...yet another topic right there!

for clubs:
if is a request I'd say something like "sure thing, I'll put it in the cue, but I have few other request ahead "
if is a craze, 3 times max/night mixing it, mashing it up, remix it.
never play requests now, unless is in the cue already, or they come up with an obscene tip.

for weddings goes the same with the exception of the bride, what she says, goes

Funny... my local peeps hate "Remixes" and "mashups" .... they want to hear the same song they hear on their IPOD.

what for ambitious peeps ...

Automix 4tw ... ^^ not against you but quite boring sometimes or ?

Some people can't "like" a song until they've heard it 5 times, that's the problem. Personally I like music and when I go out I just want to hear quality music regardless of whether I find it familiar or not.

Most people don't like "music" as they claim, they just like knowing what comes next...

I hear ya... unless they have heard it a million times on the radio they don't like it. Yet when that same song becomes a hit all of a sudden you are getting request for it. "MIA - Paper Planes" comes to mind seems like it was almost a year before that song became popular and by that time I was pretty much over it.

Personally I'll play a song as many times as I can stand to hear it in one night and what I think the crowd can stand. There is always going to be certain songs that the crowd is going to enjoy over and over again.

Well I think it depends on your type of public. At the club I went you play the music once, don't repeat. What we do some times is put anohter version of the same song... or after 4 hours repeat some rocking one. The top 10 or bests songs are played when almost all people is on the club, not earlier, not after. But I found that many of those things finally depend on the DJ and what he/she wants to do with the crowd. While you haven in fun, you are ok.

;-)

At the moment Lady GAGA and Akon are on the 'play less' list/

If requested, they have to wait longer before they get played due to too many requests.

otherwise twice a night maximum, with 2-3hous between.

marksmolinski,

With that approach you would last one night in my area if they didn't send you home early and turn on the Juke Box.

Ouch!... that's going to leave a "mark"-smolinski

If you refused to play Lady GAGA and Akon I would probably call you a taxi and send you home to play with your Slinky.
