How about a feature that allows the user to create simple buttons on the interface and then assign shortcuts to the buttons. I'm no programmer but surely this is possible?

It's not possible "on the fly" but with modifying the skin file (.xml in the according zip); check the possibilities there: http://www.virtualdj.com/support/developers/skin.html
