K, so heres the deal......
I usually just borrow my dad's jeep everytime I have to dj with my own gear, cause my peavey 15" wood speakers and heavy ass 1100watt amp is bulky and heavy. I can't keep using his car, and I have a volvo sedan. I'm thinking about getting some powered speakers, they seem to be lighter, easier to carry, and a little less combersome. The only thing i'm worried about is that there is no bass coming out of these type of speakers. So I need a suggestion of some inexpensive, good sounding, and compact speaker setup. Maybe a sub and speaker combo? Dunno too much about these speakers, my speakers and amp have been doing me good for the past 14 years....

I use The Mackie SRM450 These have Amplifiers built in and sound fantastic. Cost around £800 for a pair. These i have used at parties with around 200 guests no Bass bins. If you require a larger setup they do a Bass bin to go with them but it is quite expencive. Hope this helps.

I don't own a pair of these but I played on them at a medium sized lounge in D.C.
There were only 2 of them, no subs, just these 2 beat up, dirty, scratched up, dented grill Yamaha MSR 400's mounted on speaker stands that could not even be raised over the crowds heads. I mean the speakers looked like they were in bad shape and the stands were dented, leaning and could not be raised.
I was gonna walk out feeling the sound was gonna be BAD and I did not want to go through that. The crowd looks at the DJ like he sucks if the sound is real bad. Plus I had to use the Maya44 usb soundcard for timecode. The Maya44 usb is a good soundcard for timecode but it's not known for it's strong output.
The money was right so I went ahead and set up to play and...
WOW!!!!
These Yamahas really rocked. Loud, Clear, and I was more than impressed with the bass output.
I looked at these beat up speakers in a whole new light after that show.
You can check em out here

For small powered subs, check out Yorkville. These speakers impressed me. great for small to medium venues.

All of this will fit in a sedan

If you're worried about a Sub-woofer try one these systems.
http://www.planetdj.com/i--MATRIX-1000
This little sound system can fit into your Volvo sedan (I used to carry mine in a Grand-Am till i finished repairing my van)
The sub can pound a dance floor and the mid/highs really really project. It's actually quite a good little system.
I really enjoy mine and there are many others in my city who have started using them.

The Matrix systems are good but HEAVY AS HELL.
One of my partners has one, He likes it and only uses it for cookouts and kiddie parties. I have used it once and found it to sound good but it does not give enough sound for a medium size venue. Small venues yeah, medium to large venues, not so much. I had to run extra tops with it to fill the room with good sound and this was at a venue that held 200 people. on it's own, the B52 Matrix 1000 fell short of what I needed it to do. 10" tops can only do so much.
AND IT'S HEAVY AS HELL. HEAVE AS A BAG OF BOULDERS.

YIKES!!
That's a liiiiiiittle out of my price range, lol....
I was actually looking for something a little less expensive, i'm actually looking at (i think I just threw up in my mouth before I even get to say it) behringer powered speakers. I can't really afford mackies right now, even though i'd love to get em. I'm thinking about hitching my peaveys (even though they have been good to me for over 14 years) but they are just SOOO heavy, and square, that its impossible to get these things in the volvo. I mean I can, but its work!!
Damn, i mean i'm only making around $100 a week right now djing, but have a few fri/sat/and private events planned, it will take me atleast a month or 2 to pay off the speakers, and I need that money for other things...
Eh, still more thinking to be done....

The best speakers you can get at the mo are Logical System (LS) Beter the Martin Audio. Just thought I would add this as it's often asked whats the best, they don't do any passive stuff currently although they used to do however they are going to start doing passive speackers again soon.
I recently bought some FBT Verve tops n bins and two XTI 4000's and am impressed with both the quaility, sound and price of the gear although it is a lot more than the budget stuff that is been talked about. Personally I would not like to own or use mackie speakers.

I use a pair of RCF ART525-A. They're a little pricy but well worth it. Check them out @ www.rcfaudio.com

Believe it or not, The Behringers sound pretty good. The new ones push 600w.
They ARE pricey though...
The older ones (B215A) do sound good though and you can get a pair for $560

actually due to modern technology the powered speakers are not a bad route to take and as you grow you can always string them. I have used a single power amp to rock a club and it was fine.

do you think thereis THAT much of a difference in sound with the 12" vs the 15"?? like I said, size does matter here, and the smaller and more compact I can make my setup the better.....
Posted Tue 16 Sep 08 @ 5:08 pm
There is at least to me, a BIG difference between 12" and 15" speakers. 12" do sound good but 15" is gonna give you more low end.
Depending on what you use em for, 12" will be just fine.

Get carvin Speakers. they are alot cheaper than most Great brands and sound excellent too WWW.Carvin.COM Mackies are way too much over priced
http://www.carvinguitars.com/lm/
http://www.carvinguitars.com/lsx/
They sell alot cheaper because you are buying factory direct. Not like buying JBLs at sam ash going thru the middle man and you pay alot more
carvin uses custom Eminence drivers just like Yamaha and many other good brand.

The two venues I play at, use JBL's and Cerwin at one place and Bose at the other.
All 3 makes are good, but I do prefer the sound out the the Bose.

Just did 500 people last weekend with my Matrix B52 2000 no problem and i only had the gains on the amp about 1 o'clock.
They are about $1599.00 for this three piece 1200 watts set up.

Do u know if RCA powered speakers better than JBL when it comes to sound quality?
Posted Fri 19 Sep 08 @ 12:22 pm
I think you mean RCF.
They sound better than EON series but JBL stepped up their game A LOT with their new line and charge top dollar too.

Read a little bit up in this thread. I have suggested Yamaha and Yorkville.
The Yorkvilles are subjective because I recommended those for people that have cars instead of vans or trucks.
