Topic: ATI vs GEFORCE - which is best?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I'm thinking of building a new rack mounted computer for DJ purpose.

but since I want to use it with video mixing as well, my question is should I go for a GeForce or ATI card? Which is best for video?

And yeah, for those of you that are interested:

So far I've landed on:

  • Motherboard: 1x ABIT IP35 PRO, P35, Socket-775, ATX, Silent Otes2, 2xGbLAN, DDR2, 2xPCI-Ex16
  • Memory: 1x Corsair TWIN2X 6400C4 DDR2, 2048MB CL4, Kit w/two 1024MB XMS, 800MHz Dimm`s
  • Processor: 1x Intel Coreā„¢ 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz, Socket LGA775, 6MB, 1333Mhz BOXED w/fan
  • HDD: 2x Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 1TB SATA2 32MB 7200RPM (to be set in RAID)

I have no need for a optical device at this point, but that's something I can put in later.

And yeah, anyone got suggestions for rack cabinet(2-4U)? And a PCI sound card like MAYA44 (but with better output)?

Thanks in advance!

I don't know if he sells just the rack, but you can ask. Look here. I can't speak for ATI, but All of my computers have had nVidia, and work well with VDJ.

thanks for the link mate! kinda outdated hardware, but gives me some inspiration :)

Get ATI. They seem to play well with vdj if you are going to do video as you said get the HD series of ATI cards since they have dedicated hardware for accelerating for video files. I am waiting for a new card for my gigging computer, this is the card...
http://www.diamondmm.com/AIWHD3650PM.php This two headed beast has a hd tuner allowing you to record hd content has HDMI and DVI outputs this is so sweet.

sweet card. I think i might go for ATI. Heard from other ppl ATI is good for video.. but how is ATI + INTEL chipset? anyone knows?

Both will work great with Intel's chipset.

Anyway, If you going to go with HD series from ATI, you should use VISTA. If you go with XP, you will probably get the green stripes in video files when mixing with hardware aceleration. Thats because DX issues. The same for Geforce 8000 series.

Hmm.. That's good to know!

My laptop comes with vista pre-installed, but I downgraded to xp asap because I use it at school and I really hate vista.
When I build my rack pc, I will go for vista.

Thanks allot!

I have determined nobody knows for sure about anything hardware related and what will or won't work with VDJ unless you have the EXACT and I mean EXACT set up. I have seen problems posted where setups were identical except for one small seemingly insignificant thing (for all I know it might be the brand of resistors they put in it) and others with state of the are livermore labs partical accelarator spec'd computers that have all kinds of problems with VDJ....you just have to buy it and MAKE SURE there is a NO QUESTIONS ASKED return policy so you can bring it back and try something else if it doesn't work.

I have been through SEVERAL video cards with my 2 set-ups and a couple of friends set-ups and all of them have slight freezing problems when loading and scanning video files EXCEPT the bottom basement low end peice of crap I wrote about in another thread and unfortunatley Wal-Mart no longer sells that smae model so I could not get one.

Hands down tes't prove ATI so far......

what tests were run, the magazine "benchmark" tests don't seem to mean squat when applied to video playing as opposed to video gaming (which is a far different type of video programming from what I understand)

also with these tests what combination of motherboard, bus speed, chipset, processor, memory amount-type and speed, version of windows, etc....should I go on...were they conducted with? All of these seem to affect VDJ to varying degrees depending on the combination used.

I tried 2 ATI boards personnally in my machines and neither gave me better performance than the NVIDIA I have tried. Both of my friends who DON'T have problems with VDJ have VERY low end NVIDIA cards that work perfectly...I will say I tried a toshiba laptop in the store that had an x3100 ati and it did work well, but then so did the laptop with the intel 949 graphics accelerator that we are told to stay away from.........that's what is sooooo weird about VDJ, there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why some work and some don't.

It's like the old 60s and 70s muscle cars, just tear down the engine start replacing parts and sooner or later you'll get a combination that works.

NVIDIA RULEZ!!! that's the real thing... the only negative point of the nvidia is the price...

ATI HD 4850 here and with a fan tweak runs sweet Vista Home Premium.

And they have lots of bugs in the drivers when they first come out, the laptop versions overheat...and yes they are pricey sometimes

I also have a nvidia card in my laptop that freezes (acer aspire 5520)... And if it get overheated the whole laptop will just turn off. The worst piece of crap I've ever been using since '99 when i had a veeery cheap shitcard.. And that's a long time ago!

This is why I want to try a ATI card in my rack pc. I have one ati in my stationary computer, and it rocks in games, video and I don't get any freezes.

As it seems for me the ATI card is better for video, and nvidia cards are better for gaming.. Can this be right?

I have the ATI 3650 - purchased a machine with the ATI card because of the suggestions I read on this board.

I have freezing - so don't believe all you read. My ATI 3650 has 512mb of dedicated ram, the specs on my computers are great because it's new, and it's running vista. VDJ has freezing issues - and I can't seem to get an idea of what I need to do to get rid of them....is it just that nobody knows?

Anyway - personally - it seems to be that the best thing to do is just keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best.

What are the problems people are having with Nvidia? I've read so many comments on Virtual DJ about people having problems with XP and DirectX 10 cards believing that the cards are not backwards compatible. This is absolutely not true.

I haven't got an external monitor to test this with at but using automix (with MKV files and Virtual DJ's default internal video decoder), Windows XP 32 bit and an Nvidia 8800 GT (DX10 card) I am not noticing the freezing and green artifacts which other uses have.

but one thing that i havnt seen is,...... what format are you playing in vob mp4 mpeg what all these freezing issues everyones having could be just simply do to what format your playing and the fact that the compresstion is to tight
hell hard drives are cheep dont compress it ruins the whole video...

Well - I have a ticket open with support and just downloaded new drivers for my graphics card that I have to check out with my MP4's. The only reason I have Mp4's is because I have been relying on Smash Vidz and that's the format they have stuff in.....

True - maybe that is the problem, and hopefully I can resolve this soon.....and close my ticket. But at that same time - why would there be such an issue with using a top of the line computer playing smash vidz mp4's?
