WindowsXP, Hercules with VDJ.
I signed up for Napster for the first time last night. I signed up for basic - (12.95 a month) listening off the internet..... 7 day FREE trial.
When using VDJ to search a load music from Napster, I was asked for my user name and password. When entering them, I was told that my user name and password were incorrect - though, I know I was entering the correct ones.......??
DID I SIGN UP FOR THE WRONG TYPE OF ACCOUNT - (12.95 BASIC) ??
SHOULD I HAVE SIGNED UP FOR THE (14.95) ACCOUNT - NAPSTER PLUS ??
While looking through Napster, I wasn't too happy with the charts or genras, and had trouble navigating through them,,, it took forever with some things. Does anyone prefer Limewire over Napster??
WHAT IS BEST - Napster or Limewire??
Thanks so much for your time and help!!
Todd

For some reason or another this feature has never worked with in VirtualDJ. I could never get it to work and so alot of other users couldn't. So don't worry about that.
As for Limewire, one of the main file sharing programs, I would stay away from it, as it is illegal and you don't know what is coming down with your downloads. I know at least 5 people who have had really bad virus from it. I have never used it and never will.

limewire is baaaaaaaaaaaad my friends and i switched to using frostwire! it looks exactly like limewire but no shitty files and no viruses (so far)

Napster option inside VDJ does not work. That doesnt mean you cant play these files in VDJ, you can, I play them all the time. Be very careful with the 7 day free trial as I had issues back in the day where those files didnt work even though I paid, I had to redownload the files.
STAY AWAY FROM LIMEWIRE ILLEGAL

Thanks for all the info!! ;)
I TOO got a virus from good ol' limewire long ago - and I refuse to use them.
Again, I am totally new to this scene. I was under the impression that Napster would provide me ALL the music I ever needed, to download and play....... I guess I was wrong.
SHOULD I - Upgrade my membership with Napster,,,,, using the "Napster Plus" - (14.95) a month to download songs for play?
OR DO I - Keep my basic membership (12.95) a month, to simply audition music and then purchase the individual tracks??
Thanks so much!

Go with the 14.95, gives you all the music you want and need!!! I use it all the time and only pay for the monthly fee.

Hi discobrian how does that work with that option I would like to put the files onto an external hard drive will i be able to play them when i do my discos without any problems? many thanks

You can, I think Copy/paste the files to your external, but it's been a long time since I've used Napster. Or you could do this.
With in the options of Napster you can change the location of where you want the files to be stored.
You could set it up so, all the files go to a folder on your externel. But the only problem with that, (if you can call it a problem) is that your external will always have to be connect whilst using Napster, or Napster won't be able to find them.

Haven't tried any of the services like napster or amazon or such since their very inception when they were using drm and wma or m4p files.
Couple of questions:
(1) Are they all still drm with crappy wma or m4p files or have they gone to non drm and standard mp3 or mp4 files?
(2) Which service of this type (monthly fee for unlimited downloads) has the best selection of dance/house/trance/techno stuff?
(3) once downloded can the songs be burned to cd?

if you got a virus from limewire, then i thing we can know that limewire isn't really that good. As for napster, all you have to do so reading on it and you will see that it is a completely different world.
I find it strange that you would ask which one is better.

Why not purchase from a real source such as TM studios, Promo Only or another DJ record pool. When you donload from P2P sources you cannot guarantee quailty, plus as mentioned it is illegal.
If you want to be respected as a professional, you need to act the part. This means good quality music and equipment for the customer.

I was gonna say something but, never mind.

I would just "rent" the songs I know I was only going to need for one night (Buckcherry) and buy the ones I will play for a long time. Napster worked for me just fine. P2P = viruses and porn pop ups. It was funny(and not funny) seeing my friend have porn pop ups while using Serato and sound skipping like crazy.

in my opinion you should just forget about both limewire and napster and just buy a rapidshare premium account instead. you can have anyone upload their mixes and albums and download them in seconds. i get with my connection and a rapid premuim a full 750mb in about 12 mins. i can dl an entire single cd album in about 1-2 mins.
even with the free version of rapidshare you can get an album in 3-5 mins for a single cd. and a movie in about 2 hours due to the 15 min wait between dl's

Here's clarification for the original poster regarding some of the responses here:
Limewire: Totally illegal file sharing, it doesn't cost you a dime.
Rapidshare: Totally illegal file sharing, you pay a small amount for use of faster servers so you can illegally share files at a faster rate.
Napster: Not an illegal website as it was once upon a time there's a small catch, the songs are for PERSONAL USE ONLY, you are NOT allowed to use them for commercial use. (If you are getting paid for your services then that's considered commercial use) Unlike Limewire and Rapidshare you are spending a little money to help support the music industry just not as much as they would prefer)
As one person mentioned there are services like TM studios, Promo Only where you buy your music and you have all the legal rights to play it. If I said all the music in my database was licensed that would be a lie, If I said I currently spend more than $2,000 dollars a year on licensed music /videos that would be the truth.
It's a personal choice and I'm not here to judge. If you haven't reached a point in your "DJ career" where you are able to earn enough money to spend ANY money on music or a licensed version of VDJ then it is what it IS.
Keep working at it, there could be great things in your future.
