Can someone PLEASE explain how to RECORD mixes within software with TIMECODES. When i record i hear both decks because crossfader stays in middle within software so what setting adjustment in detail do i have to adjust to do this so i can record my mixes.

Second under V.I.P Dj's it shows a VIDEO of ICY ICE using the Total control with turntables and he has headphones on..... ???

I keep getting told i need a HARDWARE MIDI mixer like 4000 but yet i keep seeing others use total control with headphones? What am i missing? and how is he cuing via headphones? with this setup?

If you are using an external mixer, you are cutting/crossfading the sound in hardware, so you need to record from master out at your external mixer. Most mixer have an output for recordings, where you can hook up a digital recorder (mini disk or such), or you can route this back into a PC and record there...

Lots do use Midi controller to rather mix in SOFTWARE, instead of hardware... But many feel its better to do so in hardware.

Icy Ice on the demonstration video does mix in software, using a TotalControl midi controller, and has output for preview (from soundcard) going to one channel of his external mixer and output from master going to a second channel at the mixer.
This way he can cut the sound and video on the total control (midi to software), yet prelisten from the external mixer... But the external mixer is just kinda sitting there, not doing anything...

Personally, I feel its better with a real hardware mixer with midi... Icy Ice too, but we didnt have such a mixer setup for him at the time of the making of the video...

Hope that helps ;)

Thanks, Although i somewhat understand can someone post a PICTURE DIAGRAM of how to to do both these things.........

Especially setup of total control with time codes? I plan on upgrading soon to a hardware but for now would like to use TC if i can

There are many ways to control the software.. so what kind of setup would you most want to "hear" ? ;)

The "Icy Ice" setup is as follows..

1) A soundcard with TWO stereo outputs
2) VDJ timecode control
3) VDJ soundcard output set to HEADSET + SPEAKER (means prelisten and master.. )
4) PRELISTEN goes to one channel of an external Vestax mixer
5) MASTER goes to a second channel of an external mixer
6) A midi controller (Total Control here) is set up to control VDJ software audio crossfader (linked to video crossfader).

Now, he can swap what deck in VDJ to prelisten to, by pressing a button on TotalControl (it also follows active deck, so latest song loaded.. if no prelisten button pressed). Regardless of what deck he prelisten to in VDJ, it will ALWAYS go to channel 1 on his external mixer.

To channel 2 of his external mixer, the master out from VDJ will go. So what is played to channel 2, depends on the software crossfader in VDJ.

On his external mixer, he only has channel 2 volume up, for master out on his external mixer

Hope that makes sense ;)

thanks guys,Appreciate the insight I have a better knowledge on the setup.

regards,

Also, there is a little information in this thread about recording using the line in from a mixer...hope it helps.....T
