Nothing toward any one specifically but seams many think that because it's a computer based DJ solution you don't have to put in the effort of making a good music program.
We have pitch matching, automix, sync and all kinds of controllers, updates are moving fast.
I feel that VDJ offers so much that many forget or never new what it was like to create a show and actually do some work to create it. This forum is full of unhappy automix users, music falling out of "sync" or VDJ calculating incorrect bpm's, This or that controller doesn't work with this program. If it doesn't work then don't get the controller or look for a different program that does suit your needs. People bitch about updates not moving quick enough or when they do it doesn't resolve your "personal" issue.
It's so easy to blame the program but remember this is not the CURE ALL program although it's pretty damn close.
I'm just saying that any / all DJ programs should be there for convience and not a replacement for the actual DJ. If I didn't find VDJ I would be using Traktor. It definately is not as easy to use but has some great features just like other DJ solutions out there.

Sorry I had to run and didn't have a chance to finish my thought.
What happend to actually beat counting or even just as easy using a beat tap. Is it that big of a deal that you have to touch the jog wheels, the platter or button to keep things on sync? It almost feels like people just want to show up and just watch the people dance then put the next song in and push a button or two and watch the audience again. And what about the complaints about the wave forms. OMG, please! How about actually learning your music and knowing where the base and vocal are!!!! Or make cue points to guide your way but that might not work since you would have to put an effort into DJing.
Then theres the DJs against other DJs because of the controller there using. What's up with that? Hey buddy, let me make my money my way and you can make money your way. You never heard anyone talk about or critique the karaoki dj. Why is that? are they not worth the effort or do the so-called DJ not place them in the same arena.
How about the software must be crap because it doesn't work on my computer syndrom. Everytime i read something like that I laugh because I have 2 computers that doesn't even meet the VDJ standards but they work with the program. I would not actually use them on a day to day showing but if I had to use them in a pinch guess whats getting the dust blown off them.
replies please! I'm interested in reading people comments.

TOTALY agree with you...
Best post in ages, and so valid and true.
The DJ should be a DJ, and one should learn DJ basics before going nuts on a DJ software.

You've pretty much nailed it.
I'm on a bunch of different forums, and some of the mentality I see is just stunning to me - still.
I've actually gotten into a (let's call it a) "debate" with one guy who trashed VDJ because it has an automix, therefore (in his view), it's not a "real" software for D.J.s. Here's an idea: if you think using any form of automix is "cheating", DON'T USE IT. Generally speaking, I don't. His software of choice is Serato, which is fine. If something is right for you, and suits your needs, that's the right product and/or software for you. This being said, when VDJ is capable of doing what Serato does and more - how is having FEWER FEATURES a plus?
The most annoying thing was: the guy started a thread asking for advice, and then proceeded to reject the advice he got.

Just because a feature is there doesn't mean you should be reliant on it, or even use it in some cases. I've not converted my entire collection to MP3, so sometimes I flit between VDJ and alternate media (or like the other week when my laptop was having a fit VDJ wasn't used for half the night!). I see this as a good thing as it's too easy to become complacent and used to what you have!
I'm probably not a great person to comment on this however - I have used automix a grand total of once (New Years Eve last year, after work we all sat down, got drunk and played some poker etc... and automix provided the background music), I never correct CBGs or use sync, I just load and go... the only VDJ features I really use are the browser, cue points, loops and video.

In my normal commercial music residencies I have a tendency to use the Sync button with tunes and videos (due to very short intros/outros).
I played a couple of times in Ibiza a week ago, and, as I was playing different varieties of House music, I never touched the Sync button once. I used the pitch faders on my VCI-100 and counted the beats to fire off the next tune to mix in and adjusted with the outer ring pitch bend as on CDJ1000s.
That's the beauty of software like VDJ, it's adaptable to the way you work, you don't HAVE to use all the extras available.

This has too be my personal favorite Fat. Every time I see, or hear, one of those statements (or the "if your not using time codes/Serato your a looser" statement) I have to stop myself from getting angry. Like its anyones business what controller another DJ uses?!? I often try too come up with subtle ways of asking what kind of car they drive. And then proceed to inform them what kind of car they should drive. Most pick up on what I am getting at, its the ones who don't that are a lost cause. I'm a big guy, like its anyones business if I decide to squeeze my 6'4" frame into a Mini Cooper or Prius. Or, what picture I want to put up on my MSN avatar. Its all personal choices. If I choose a MKII and make $700 a night no one has the right to tell me "You're not a real.....".
My other favorite is when someone who claims have "been DJing a long time" comes up mid gig and tries to tell me what I need to buy. WTF? I'm working here!!! Take a business card and call me later, we'll talk then.
But yeah, everyone should learn the basics. Read the room, be polite, remember its a job, not an excuse to get drunk. The simple little things most everyone here know already. But like my late father used too say, God rest his soul, "Terry Micheal, there are more horses asses in the world then there are horses."

Played chilled Deep House at The Orange Corner Tuesday afternoon 17th June for the 3rd year in a row, followed on from Jamie Gittings & Sean Hughes Internet Radio Show. Also played Electro/Tech House at Bora Bora on Thursday 19th June following on from Alex Miles. :-)

Brilliant!!
I think it is great that there are so many different ways to DJ, with or without software. I like reading about everyone's experiences and their tricks and their failures. It's part of what makes it cool to DJ, getting it done, however. Doing what it takes to make it all happen. Hell, you just know some old head from back in the day mixed with a couple of Sony Walkman cassette players, and he probably rocked the party.

Wicked 2 posts fat's. Agree with you 100%.
The art of manual beat counting and beat mixing is still going strong here mate. I'm a old school DJ at heart, but using new school technology and lovin it mate.

In the NBA they don't play "Fundamental B-ball it's all about the dunk", MLB players don't know the "fundamentals" they just want to hit homeruns, NFL players dont' tackle like in the good ole days, kids can't read face clocks because they only know digital watches, the language is disappearing because of text message abbreviations......in my day we weren't learning anything because we were OH MY GOD using calculators............Times change, technology changes, society changes......like the dinosaurs evolve or become extinct!
As I have always no matter how you do it or the tool syou use to do it if someone pays you to do it you are a PROFESSIONAL no matter what anyone else thinks.
As far as the software being buggy, in a perfect world it would be nice if it worked properly out of the box when I spend my hard earned money to buy it. After all my Technics 1200's always did, my cdj 500's did, so did my 700's and my 1000's...computers and software are a different realm because society has "accepted" an imperfect product from the get go because we believe the benefits far outweigh the hassles and embarrassment of them not working a significant percentage of the time...........To the extend that I continue to use them I have to agree. I'll take the easy and convenience of a 90% working software and computer over the "good ole days" of luggin around heavy turntables and crates of records anyday...that's why I switched 10 years ago when BPM Studio was the only real software option, but I'll be honest if my car had only 1% of the bugs my computer and software have I would be suing the holy crap out of Hyundai, Toyota, Ford and Chevy (and all the others) to get it fixed immediatley.

Hey good post...I agree...
I must note though that VDJ has helped me learn to beat match...it really helped me grasp the idea in a visual form. I'm still fairly new at beat matching and can't always get the beats to line perfectly (just using my ear) but I'm working on it...

Good one ;)
And that I hope ALL do that get VDJ, Traktor, PCDJ or what else...
Try LEARN how to dj manually, and your mixes in the software will be SOOOOOOOOOOO much better!!
No software can find the right downbeat, the right timing, the right spot, or the human feel to the mix!
Great attitude and aproach Ville... You'll mix like a KING real soon ;)

at the same time. i LOVE automix. saved my ass at my first club audition when i forgot my 1/4 headphone adapter so i had to play by ear and trust the bpms that it loaded. sync. and i did my thing. so props to all, versatility in the program is unmatched.
JUST WISH I COULD GET 5.1 ALREADY ;)
