First of all, you must do test. Try using what you have and check the results. If you are not happy with them, then is time to an upgrade.

I have my destop PC, an Nvidia 7600GT with 256DDR3 PCIeX16. Incredible performance for the price.
I run from the second ouput of the video card a 10 yards VGA cable to the projector.
For the camera, i use a large custom made RCA cable. I switch with the projector remote VDJ/CAMERA/VDJ.

For laptops, there are so many many many threats about laptop video cards... do a quick search and you will find very useful info.

Im using a Dell inspiron 1501 AMD turion 64 X 2 2.0 ghz each core. 2 gigs of ram and a 256 mb video card. I want to know what video card users are using to have an idea of what i should get.

I use 2 machines both are desktops.

Mobile gig machine (pics in blog)
amd athlon dual core
2gb ddr2 800mhz ram
gForce 6150 integrated video dual out. (512mb memory.)

Home desktop
amd dual core
2 GB 800 mhz ram
ATI Radeon 2600pro vid card.512MB

The mobile machine can handle video sessions for lengths of over 10 hour sessions. I use every plugin, every effect.
sonics
clipbank
slideshows
all transitions available for download

automix (during dinner, cocktails)
and finally music videos - encoded at mpeg2 dvd format.

I showed the software to the Strip club I just left (long story) and they're mouth hit the floor. Needless to say they installed it with a DMC2.

What your should look for is at least a 512MB ddr2 Dedicated vid card. Make sure the driver/softwear package is updated for the best video drivers (solves green line issues) Desktops are are much faster and better at video than laptops. (you exchange computing power for portability) If you're just doing mobile and space isn't an issue I strongly suggest you get a rack case and build your own system. If you're doing clubs and are familiar with the space in the DJ booth, you might be able to squeeze a DJ Capsule in. Otherwise you are going to be purchasing a laptop.

There's another thread discussing laptops that can mix videos right out of the box.
