I'm a total novice on this DJ'ing environment. So new that I don't even know the proper lingo to use.
So, anyway, I was given a hard drive full of karaoke files with extension .kma.
The are about 20,000 songs on the drive but I haven't figure out a way to play them.
I researched this type of files and found out this is a proprietary format used by Video Hoster which I downloaded and demoed but didn't like.
Has anyone been able to play this file format (kma) using VirtualDJ?

Hi jronline,
MTU (the company that makes Video Hoster), also makes a program called Songverter for only $39.99.
I personally use MTU Microstudio to rip my karaoke disk to my hard drive, and then I use MP3 + Toolz to convert them to MP3+G and to zip them up. I have found MTU to be the best program for ripping Karaoke files without any errors.
You can test the software with the demo version before buying to check out the quality.
Anyway Virtual DJ will not support KMA files.
You may be able to find something else that will convert them if you Google it, but I recommend Songverter for the best quality.
PS, I hope you are planning on getting a valid copy of Virtual DJ if you decide it is what you are going to use:)

So you were given 20,000 illegal copies of karaoke files and want to know how to play them?
Try purchasing the originals for 30 to $50k that will solve the problem.

Zipped files clean up your hard drive, one file for one song instead of two files for one song.In the case of kma. files, the file size is cut in half without loss of quality, kma files are also encrypted to work on the computer that created them, this way an employee can't copy the 20,000 music files you purchased and sell them to someone else.

im still not sold on the idea of zipping the files into one..
these days, harddrive space is cheep.
i have all my karaoke discs in folders ie. Sunfly 001 has the songs from that disc.
i know other people like to put their tracks in genre order, but i find it better to work in album order. thats haw i satarted DJing. with CDs and Vinyl.
so zipping the 2 files to make one file is still no no for me. the mp3 dosent reduce in size as its already 'compressed' audio. you save a bit of space on the already small .cdg file !!! no thanks.

Mark your correct that zipping files won't save much space and storage is dirt cheap.
I just prefer cutting the number of files in 1/2. I've never had a problem either way.
