Topic: Would this setup work

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi all. New user here.

I have a question to ask about setting up VDJ.
currently I have the trial version, so want to make sure this will work before I take the plunge:-)

I have two Denon S3500's, and normal DJ mixer (no midi). I have the timecoded CD's. I can use the Cd's to control MP3's (and video) in VDJ no worries. But I want to start to be able to use it for video with the transitions as well. Now to do this I'm guessing I need some like the Total control unit and the Numark sound card (or similar).

What I also want to be able to do, is play normal CD's on the Denons, without using VDJ. As I don't as yet, have all my music on the laptop.

Am I asking the right questions or barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks all

There was a Bypass option in Timecode settings for ordinary CD's, was removed in some version due some problems, not sure is it back now, will check and report back.

I have a somewhats similar set and let me give you the breakdown. I have the Denon S3000 and DNX100 mixer.

First off you will need an ASIO sound card for time code. I started off with the Hercules MK2 which is good for bedroom DJ'ing but dont take it in the club. A cheaper option would be a used Maya 44USB ($100). However the perfect option would be a Torq conectiv or other respectable ASIO card. I personally have the Conectiv one and it works perfect for scratching and sound quality. Plus it comes with software that you can use as a back up in case you get tired of VDJ all the time. FYI - the conective card also has a bypass feature so you can play regular CDs. The MK2 bypass feature is crappy (atleast with my S3000)

The second part is the video control. When video mixer A regular DJ mixer will the audio portion but it wont cross over the video portion. With this you will need a midi controller such as the M-Audio X-Session pro. You will be able to crossfade the video and audio simutaneously however If you are a scratch DJ I dont know how capable it functions on that level. In addition you will still have to use ur regular mixer when playing regular CDs

If you are trying to get a sound mixer (not midi) that controls audio and video like the Rane TTM57 then you will have to do some more research as I have not looked that far.

Thanks dtweed76.

Another question if I may:-)

If I got something like the torq connectiv and that exponent controller (or similar like a BCD3000), can the controller be mapped to VDJ? Will the controller then enable me to use the internal transitions etc for the video?
You say the connectiv has a bypass feature, or is that actually in the software?

Thanks again

You can use any controller to map MIDI to control video or audio.

Thanks dtweed76.

(note to admins: why doesnt these threads have a reply with quote so i dont have to copy and paste the questions?)

The controller can be mapped to midi. I've done this with a Trigger Finger and also with Mixman MK2. I'm not at home right now to see how the lay out is for VDJ but when I get home I will confirm if you can use the controller for video transitons as well.

The conective has 2 volume control knobs on the top that function as a bypass switch. Just note that the conectiv must be either plugged into a laptop or a power supply to work.

Hi dtweed u need to enable ur BB code message format. Then u will a small werd "quote" at ur right hand top of the windows ur post. Click on it n u have it;)

Look here.

Thanks Spinna... i never knew what that was for.

DJjon76 - As for the Video Transitions they can be midi mapped. Let me know if you need anything else I will be happy to test it out for you since I have all the components at hand already.
