About Earth Hour

On March 31 2007, for one hour, Sydney made a powerful statement about the greatest contributor to global warming – coal-fired electricity – by turning off its lights. Over 2.2 million Sydney residents and over 2,100 businesses switched off, leading to a 10.2% energy reduction across the city. What began as one city taking a stand against global warming caught the attention of the world.

In 2008, 24 global cities will participate in Earth Hour at 8pm on March 29. Earth Hour is the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take the simple steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoing basis. It is about simple changes that will collectively make a difference – from businesses turning off their lights when their offices are empty, to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby.

Probably the most overlooked and hushed polution factor and fuel glut are the airlines that circle the globe on a daily basis flying full or not.
Check this out.

And, btw, when 911 happened and the planes didn't fly for a week, the price of fuel fell dramatically.

They have imposed strict emissions on all cars here including exaust probed inspections that analyze the gasses emitted and trucks are reguired to burn low sulfur fuels all of which has driven the cost of vehicles and fuel sky high.

End consumers have done their part and most Americans are very environmentally conscious from conservation to recycling.

There are other parts of the world taking their place as industrial era counrties that need a wake up call soon.

Its a big problem.

Whatever calculations you may do, then you should come out with the result that the 737-600 is probably the most economic airliner considering fuel burn per hour, while the similar sized 737-200 is a real fuel guzzler.

But anyway, let me give you an answer: 1000 - 2000 US gallons/hour depending on circumstances.

Quote :

The current most common 737 is the 737-300. Here are some very rough values, that a certain airline uses to compute manual flight plans incase the computer system fails.
Climb - 2950lbs / 15mins
Cruise - 5500lbs/hr
Descent - 600lbs / 20mins
Hold - 2650 / 30mins
Alternate - 1950 / 20mins
Min arrival fuel - 6300lbs
Recomended arrival fuel - 8300lbs
These numbers were based on a 27000lbs payload (approx 130pax plus bags)

Times THOUSANDS of flights daily world wide.
With Aircraft that has no emission gear exausting right into the "jet stream" or our atmosphere.

Care to add NOISE POLLUTION to the list?

just to get right to the point , i've often thought that Australians aren't you know , really that bad .........

Chuck, were not really that bad..
People seem to have the wrong perception about us for some reason... maybe the pet crocodiles & snakes we have in our backyards may have something to do with it :-)

According to the UN, "the livestock sector generates more greenhouse gas emissions as measured in CO2 equivalent – 18 percent – than transport. It is also a major source of land and water degradation."

Where's the beef?

PS. No I'm not a vegetarian.

grug.

kaoz .... yer awright and as you can probably tell i was just bein' my slightly?? strange self .........fer the last coupla daze i've been droppin' in at the forum and posting a lil insanity just fer the halibut ........keeps things lively i think

i'm not vegan but my daughter is ..... i believe it's true that if we mostly ate plant material we would hurt the environment much less than we do with meat .........i might go vegan at some point .......as a kinda moral imperative

Most cities in the world took part , except for london who dint give a monkeys the shame!

so if livestock create more greenhouse gasses (by being vegetarians BTW) than the rest, would it really make sense for people who are "earth friendly" to be vegans and create even more greenhouse gasses?...

just a thought.

if the sierra club is gonna be that vocal about saving the environment, shouldnt they have a "zero footprint" to set the example instead of flying and driving their people all over the place?

just a thought.

if greenpeace wants to save the whales and help the environmet, why do they use old beat up rust-bucket ships with diesel engines and small boats with out-board engines that throw out a constant stream of oily smoke?

just a thought.

recycling can be good for the environment, but do you know how much electricity it takes to recycle aluminum? making a house out of cans isnt gonna help - still gotta dig for more bauxite to make the aluminum to meet demand.

just a thought.

i'm all for saving the earth for my future little dj's. i just can't stand the hypocrisy that goes with it today. i drive a car that i tank up once a month, my son recycles cans for pocket money, we re-use walmart bags for other things, i don't turn on a light unless i need it. but, i'm not gonna profess to be environmentally friendly. i'm just being human like all the rest.

and before you get on your high-horse - our profession can not exist without causing pollution in multiple forms.

"I get asked all the time , What are you doing for the environment, Ron....???"
"Cows release methane gas, and add to the Greenhouse effect, This is a major Problem Ron....."
"What Are you doing for the environment!!!?????"

"I'm eating the damned cow!!!"

Stand-up Comedian Ron Whyte.

Scientific factiod here...the largest producer of CO2 is

THE OCEANS THEMSELVES!!! the exchange of gases between the ocean surface and the atmosphere we breath generates CO2 gas. CO2 is needed by all green plants for them to use in their growth. I am all for being a steward of the environment and being careful of the world around us however, do your homework. The florescent bulbs (for example) the so called ecologist would have us use instead of incandescent bulb contain mercury, which is a heavy metal and even more poisonous to the the environment. Please do research and don't believe everything you hear on television. This is from the man who created The Weather Channel John Coleman, please read it http://media.kusi.clickability.com/documents/Comments+on+Global+Warming02.pdf

And for that Chuck EVERYONE!!!! thanks you.....
