Touch screens still cost too much for what they can do. Aren't there cheaper ones?

I've looked into this and contemplated buying a "Tablet" laptop that would work like the HP Touchsmart (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF05a/35123-35527-39847-39847-39847-12939752.html?jumpid=reg_R1002_UKEN) but no notebook or tablet is anywhere near as good.

The Touchsmart is an "All-in-one" solution but it's quite heavy to be carrying around. I took a trial of VDJ to our local PC World and loaded the software onto the Touchsmart to have a play around. The best thing about it is the "COOL" factor of using your fingers on the screen to load tracks etc. With a little practice you could even ditch the MK2 or other controller from your setup.

Dell have a high end laptop that's about £2000 UK Sterling but I've not had a play with that.

The only problem with a touch screen is that your font and buttons need to be big in order for you to not press the wrong one on accident. We use two touch screen at my club for our LightJockey light show and I still sometimes press the wrong buttons with the touch screen. And my fingers aren't that big.

I've done it. My first full system built in 2001 had a touch screen. I used it with PCDJ FX and VDJ. It worked great and at the time, it worked well as a cross fader..

I no longer have a touch screen...

I have two prodjpc touchscreen systems and love them.

Some of the functions for most skins that require accureate clicks can be tricky to use. I would love to see more skins designed for touchscreen systems. Overall, using the touchscreen is great!

thanx for the commonts fellow dj's really thinkin of getting a touch screen now.
peace

Why not create your own touch screen, that's what I did (but not for use with VDJ). I created a touchscreen operated jukebox for use with iTunes and a connected MAC Mini.

I got a DELL monitor from eBay, removed the front bevel and placed a touchscreen panel over the monitor. Then replaced the bevel. Load some software on the MAC to emulate a mouse click and there you have it, a D.I.Y touchscreen monitor.
I can post the images somethime if anyone is interested?

Sure Party..post the pics..that would be cool to see...

Touch screen jukeboxs have been out for ages every pub has one, if you go touch screen you may as well go into jukebox hire, think about it. You will be a jukebox operator, you will look stupid as there is no skill required.

Saying something like that goes into the catagory of the person who just beat matches a song or a person who pushes sync then fade. Does that mean they are not DJs?

Can't put up the pictures :(
I'm running on a MAC and currently this forum doesn't support Safari :(
I'll give it a go during work tomorrow ;)

Hi Charlie, What's wrong with using a touch screen for your interface?

Post your pics to TinyPics or Photobucket..
and then copy/paste the link here....should work Party

*cough*buy turntables noobs*cough*

if you are seriously buying this software AND a touchscreen monitor just to DJ then you are a complete idiot
Go out and buy some Tables and a mixer... you can get a nice set up for under $1000 nearly anywhere

While there is definately a side for tt's but don't forget there can be a business side for a different way marketing yourself. Its not always just the music it can be the entertainment and how you market yourself.

Most mobile DJs don't use turn tables because there is no real advantage to it. Not that they can't use them. Some areas or clubs don't have the large space for tt's so smaller cd decks might be in order. Touch screens is just another way of making yourself more marketable. No more, no less

Yes they are DJ's, but there not respected. It's the way it is, you get respected by doing something that requires skill, dedication and that not everybody can do.

Hi Charlie, What's wrong with using a touch screen for your interface?

i think taking it to this stage is silly, I could not take anyone seriously that used something like that.

There is nothing wrong with using a touch screen to dj with. I guess it really depends on your reason for djing. If your djing for respect there is an argument for using turntables. If you're djing for money then carrying turntables might not be the best solution. Most djs I know who carry turntables make considerable less money than djs who don't. On average there are very few club/vinyl djs who make more than wedding/mitzvah jocks. There are some but the numbers are small. Getting on that stage is like making it to MLB.

If I may interject here..this is very true...so what the tableist might not respect me. I presently own three complete systems (not one table system) and employ 3 people. So, let them say their junk about respect. Do what ever you need to do, make your DJ system fit you. That is one of VDJs strong points, customizing your system to you.
