I have several AVI files that will play fine in Windows media player, but are very jittery and freeze in VDJ. What might fix this?

Its impossible to tell from the info you provide, as AVI file is just a container...
"inside" the avi file, there might be all from mpeg, divx, xvid and a whole bunch of other coded films..
To decode films one needs a codec installed, and VDJ supports a WIDE range... but its impossible to support all.
What you can do, is try to use a good codec pack, that will suit almost any file within what codecs are normally used
