This topic keeps coming up, have a search but,
I would say have a look at the mid range Toshiba Laptops, I have one and recommend them.
If you a just doing audio I would say, a duo core processer is a must, at least 1gig of ram ( 2 if you are planning video ). If planning video than a dedicated video card is a must with at least 256mb of ram anboard.
I hope this helps alittle

I'm devoted to HP try their dv 8000 or 9000 series, they work with two hard drives and you should get an intel dual core platform, get the best one that you can afford.
I'm not big fan of vista so make sure you can get something that has drivers for xp too(some of the toshiba and hitachi are only vista).
people here said that vista is better for video so an xp laptop vista capable should work best.
you want a lot of ram, a good screen and I love a numeric kbd for the 17 inch ones.

Also a Toshiba owner here. I own the A135 series Pentium Dual Core. It came with 1GB of memory and I've since upgraded to 2GB. Very fast, Vista works excellent on here. I've owned this since Mid-August. I'd put my vote in for Toshiba also; not too expensive, yet very efficient.
However, if you plan on putting a lot of music onto your HD, go with the largest possible or buy an additional external HD. Mines has 120GB, yet I only have 40GB free, so I plan on getting at LEAST a 160GB external. Another note, if this is also going to be used to play PC games, be sure to get one with a pretty decent graphics card. That is the only flaw I'd say mines has, because I can't play many games or get very low FPS due to the integrated video card. However, most games play fine and on the ones with problems the screen will blank for a few seconds and the screen will re-appear.
BUT, for $550USD I am very pleased.

If you want a really good spec, go with Toshiba Qosimo, Alienware Area 51, Rock Extreme.
I dont suggest Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer or other cheap manufacturers. You want rugged, well-built and quality components. Keep in mind, this is a machine that will be toted around to environments with blistering humidity, juggled around in bags and maybe have an encounter or two with a pint of beer.
The class of machine is essentially a gaming machine. But the absolute main things you want to look at:
-Very good but not necessarily top of the line; video with decent vram
-High RAM, no less than 2 gig DDR2 or 3
-Drives with fast spinrate ******* (7200rpm no less)
-Optional but very usefull - Raid 0 configuration to double the access rate of your drives
-CPU, dont go under 2ghz these days. The more power here, the more ease on your machine when using effects.
Essentially you can use VDJ with less than the above, but you wanted a good spec. Expect to spend 2500-4000USD on a decent laptop. If your budget is 2000 or less than lower your expectations to average and less.

yep that is a way too!
I still believe that vdj has more pc users and the pc version is ahead at this moment, but apple is the choice of many pros in the music industry

Paz, how come you don´t recomend asus ? I understand that u don´t recomend,lenovo,dell and acer..but asus ?

hmm, well asus seems okay but i have a friend who didnt like his at all and i trust him as a well-read nerd. ive had several components from asus over the years, motherboard, video card etc. they were always a bit buggy.
i could be wrong, but from reading it seems asus is in the same game as acer.

I run a ASUS G2S for audio and video and have had no problems that are directly linked to the laptop.
I actually retired my rack mount to home when i got it. It runs solid and has brought lot's of joy to my back now that i dont lug that heavy ass rack mount around anymore.
I am actually getting ready to order the smaller G1S to run as a back up.
I've also read that alienware is nothing more than a souped up dell.

dell bought alienware a few years back but alienware still builds in their own plant in florida. i own an alienware and have been through 4 dells over the years and i can say its like comparing apples and fish. dell makes nice cheap-ass laptops but are lowlowlow build quality. my alienware is the best laptop ive ever owned and was well worth buying

I have used this Sony Vaio for over a year now and I have to say it's been my favorite gig lappy so far. It runs DJ, Video, and Karaoke without any problems at all. I think the key to it was that the video card has 128 of its own memory. That frees up the lappy so it barely even registers on processing. Runs nice and cool too! You can find better prices, but this link will give you the specs. I like my Toshibas too, but they didn't seem to run video as well as the Sony.

Can't go wrong there. I'd get the mac book pro the regular mac books aren't that powerful. I run both vista and 10.5 on mine.

I recommend MSI GX700 Laptop
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&prod_no=1227&maincat_no=135&cat2_no=271
Good price, great performance, 2 years of warranty (unlike all others here mentioned).
