This part of topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information

Serato just released it's 1.8 video plug in - competition is always good for the consumer???

I read a few Psots over on the serato board,

Sounds like some of the guys are haveing many problems setting it up properly.

And the Video module is LOCKED to the rane tt 55 (I think) mixer. No 19" option for mixers

So far interesting things.

You need to have a Rane TTM57sl but that will not always be the case. For the first release however you will need the 57. More then anything its a marketing ploy on there part to make people buy there mixer.

The post I found the most intersting was the fellow who had problems with video display and he said flat out:

I use both these computers and they run virtual dj without problems (or something very similar to that)

The Serato Video module seems to be a bit of a resource pig, is what I get from that fellows post.

May you live in interesting times

I can't wait till a Serato fan say's "it's only teething problems"......Hehe.

Bring it on Serato, you're messing with a big boy now, VirtualDJ

Greetings to all!!!!!!!!

If you don't think Serato is a big boy you are wrong. They have the ProDJ timecode market locked down. Every big name DJ uses Serato and I have yet to see one that uses VDJ. One of the reasons for this is Serato works on a Mac. All DJ's for the most part use Mac's because they are the standard in the audio industry. If VDJ wants to play with the big boys they better get VDJ for the mac working...

Globetap,

Have you ever heard of Denis Ferrer, Coldcut or Benny Benassi?

these are only 3 of the ones well known to the VDJ community that currently uses VDJ at their shows.

Best Regards

DJ White Devil

Also Kenny Jason....one of the originators of the Chicago House sound....a VDJ user......

@Globetap, dont mistake marketing mass for quality of product. Rane is known worldwide, and few people know about VDJ because of marketing budget. Rane is a huge company, Atomix a small one. It's through a quality product that Atomix gets by with VDJ and the community grows. It's by sheer monetary budget Rane gets by. Times are changing though. Rane users are getting irritated at how slow the product is progressing.

Personally I dont like it, its much too latent and the software is too basic. Made a decision long ago that Rane's Serato is not worth my time.

There are things I like about serato - it's much vaulted reliability, and time code stability.
I didn't like the software "feel"

I liked the fact that it has "made for" hardware - But didn't like the price of the hardware.

There's good and bad things about serato - except that It didn't do video. and for all practical purposes - it still doesn't.

Baby steps. But it's coming.

I got the Serato video plugin working good on my PC. The video transitions are a little disappointing. They don't have anything like the Satellite boom transition that VDJ has. The time code and scratching is way ahead of VDJ, that always sounds perfect. I'm still going to be using VDJ for my video shows for the next month or so, but will eventually move to Serato only.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that Serato's video plugin doesn't have any type of ambient video or anything like sonique to run in the background when you play just audio. That's kind of a bummer.

Common sense, Serato "just" got video plugins, wait till they have it completely finished and fixed. Personally I'm looking for to Serato due to I can't get the commonly known "skip, snap, crackle, and pop issues. The more I hear it the more I wan't to switch to something else, but I'm still puttng effort to fix it. And hopefully things go alright, I'll buy VDJ Pro.

True VDJ has more features then Serato. I am a VDJ user and i am aware of these features but my biggest problem with VDJ is the lack of support for Apple OS X and as i said in my first post in order to be taken serious in the pro audio community you need a working Mac version of VDJ. All these DJ's use macs, DJ AM, DJ Aoki, DJ Five, DJ Jazzy Jeff and so on....

to be taken serious in the pro audio community you need to have been educated in it and do good work. these days anyone can buy software and make noise, but that doesnt mean they understand the principles of production, mastery and sound; pc or mac...

Thats true Virtual dj has to step up to the plate. I live in New york and everywhere and i mean everywhere and everyclub uses serato. Its like the standard 1200s. All you see is 1200s, serato box and pioneer cdjs. Serato is everywhere like a spreaded virus. Ill tell you one thing, its not about how you can configure it to work like a dream car or you can do this or super drop the latisity. Its all about it being stable and working 100 percent and having your cue pionts. 90 percent of the best dj in the world cant be wrong. I have virtual viny and serato and know the difference from both.

just because everyone knows serato doesnt mean its better, it means they dont know about vdj. if you asked every big dj 'do you know about vdj' at least 70% of them would say now. i've switched 6 users in my local area who knew serato but never heard of vdj. however for many users who dont care to look into details, they are more subsceptible to brand loyalty because they cannot talk the 'specs' and thus you cannot change their mind. and this is totally fine, but doesnt make a logical argument against vdj.

i've seen serato crash very miserably, much more than ive ever experienced with vdj and i have used both professionally. but then again, im a programmer and know alot about hardware and have 20 years experience at it. not exactly fair fo the entry user, so yes, id say serato has a point won on that front.

this likens to the mac vs pc war. a successful pc user unfortunately needs to know about computers, whereas mac users dont need to know anything; 'it just runs'. while in the practical sense this is a winning argument for macs, it also classes the users. but face it, the development bed and the oem market is very much pc. if you dont understand programming and how selling software works, refrain from commenting.

if you want something to be out of the box, fairly stable and dont want to bother learning about it, buy serato. if you like to tweak, customize and push the envelope, serato sucks, get vdj. i analogized in an other thread: serato is a stock car, vdj is a custom. those who want to customise their car obviously need to learn and know cars and what to use; thats vdj.
