I was wondering how people build their song library in here. Do you buy cd's every week? How do you keep up with what's hot and new? Do you know/remember all the names of the new artists/songs? Do you watch MTV all day?
I'm totally new at this, but loving it, and I was wondering (as my actual cd library isn't so actual anymore) how the 'real' dj's keep up with it?

hey i'd like to know about hip hop and r&b songs when they are first released
i dont find many sites with this stuff
c MOST of what i do but not all
is i remix songs
if i can know about songs when they are first released i'd choose what i like and get familiar with it and maybe make a remix and release it when the songs just get famous
itll be a good boost for me
coz if u work good on a remix and think it over
by the time its done the song is already gettin played out lol
does anyone know any sites i can go to for pre release or just released ???????????

what's wrong about vinyl ???!!!

Hi,
As soon as people mention that they no longer buy cd's or vinyl that makes me worry, because it makes me automatically believe that they download music illegally, I'm sure it's not always the case, however many users are saying they have stupid amounts of mp3's.., in the tens and even in the hundreds of thousands...
If these records were bought as singles or even compilations then that is alot of moneys worth. So these people are either old collecters (useing vdj, yea right!), stinking rich/have money to burn... or perhaps they don't buy most of their music..
To avoid going off topic, I buy my music from uk record stores or online record stores (not dl), And to keep up with music I watch mtv dance for the latest releases, and other chart tv shows, listening to late radio is the best way to get hold of the names of hot tracks that are not yet commercialy known.
Probably the best way is to collect particualr compilation cd's that cater to your style/styles of music you play or like.., such cd's have all the newest releases and have some great tracks that aren't known so well, a few weeks later (or even months), you'll find the more commercial sounding tracks in the charts...
That's about it really, but what makes me a little different from most dj's perhaps is that I play all good dance music, whether it's new or older, as the music from say the past 6 weeks doesn't usually compare to the best music from the past 6 years, so I mix it up quite considerably...

The two web-sites I check out mostly for new music are GlobalGroove.co.uk, which features all the latest big commercial releases on its home page, and for a wider selection of music (house, r&B, hip-hop, d n'b, funk, garage, trance etc) there is juno.co.uk which is my personal favourite. Juno has samples for hundreds of new releases every week and is generally fantastic!

I have been a DJ for 9 years using strictly vinyl and I must say that vinyl is quite expensive compared to CDs. now with the TCV technology its great to see that we can spend a lot less money on singles then buying the actual vinyls.
I used to pay approx 20$ (Canadian funds) per single. now with VDJ I only spend 1.50 US per song downloaded @ mp3.com.
when you compare the price I was spending a few years ago to the price I'm spending now its quite the savings although in a way I did have to pay extra in order to save.
The other reason I decided to stop buying vinyl is because its so heavy to carry around. I have a collection of over 50 000 vinyls (mostly albums and singles). When you look at a collection of this size the first thing that comes to mind is "Where do you keep all of that?" Yes it does take a lot of room in the basement although there are a lot of albums and singles that have never been taken out of their original packaging and those are worth a faire bit of cash if I was to ever sell them (no I am not looking to get rid of my collection).
I first looked at TCV as a mean to carry less to my gigs which I must say is a terrific way of not having to carry an extra 200-300 lbs of stock. Being able to bring much more music and carry less is one hell of an improvement for any DJ.
I hate downloading or even touching illigally copied mp3s due to the fact that everyone will rip their songs with different levels (ie: some will have way too much bass or the volume will not be the same as other tracks. So now when I download from 1 strict source (mp3.com) I get the same quality for every song downloaded.
Who ever said being a DJ is not an expensive hobby was wrong! even if your looking to save cash you still have to spend the extra buck to do so.

I buy from Perfect Beat but also download from Audiojelly.com, Traxsource.com and Beatport.com they're all paid services. Can anybody else list more digital dl domains? I like to support the artists by paying for their music

I used to look at the promoonly lists and then purchase the songs I want from itunes, beatport,etc.. I belong to promo only now..too lazy hehe

Beatport and Audiojelly are my faves...cheap, only $1.99 on BP and maybe $3 on Audiojelly. Anjunabeats.com for Above & Beyond stuff (around $2.50) and armada website for Armin Van Buuren and around $4...that's all I need to be current...spend only $10 a week!

I was also introduced to promoonly, but opted not to join, what I do is surf the web radio stations, not only in your area but popular cities as well, find their playlists and download the top songs, usually on pay P2P web-sites, I do not believe in stealing music, but a lot of people do and you can usually find the music you are looking for.

I buy a lot of CDs still, mainly from HMV.co.uk, Ebay, or Juno.co.uk. And I heavily rely on www.traxsource.com and www.stompy.com for my digital downloads.
Building a collection is something that takes time. Seems there a so many people now wanted to DJ and just have an instant record collection, but it doesn't work like that. Same goes from people getting into producing. They automatically want to have a huge collection of samples and plugins, but again it takes years to build up. Be patient.

Promo only is a fantastic way to stay abreast on current music. Whatever you need they have it from top 40, urban, rhythm, rock, and different club and latin variations. If you are looking for more remix applications, check out TM Century's Prime Cutz. Similar to the promo only cd's yet the big differenve is that as a subscriber, you have access to an online database of accapella and instrumental versions of songs, from pop to hip hop. This might be exactly what you are looking for. www.Promoonly.com and www.tmcentury.com (then click on "music"). And yes, promo only requires that you prove you are a professionally working Dj.
