celeron is a budget processor with features to match. not recommended for high performance computing.

core duo and core II duo processors are high performance processors with price tags to match. core duo are dual core first of all, meaning it's basically two cpus on one die. core 2 duo processors are also 64bit, faster bus speeds, bigger cache, etc. all the things that make a processor better.

core II duo also have vt extensions, if you don't know what that means than you probably don't need or care about them anyway.

core II duo processors should also be socket compatabile with core duo extreme (quad core). i might need to check intel's site on that one but i'm pretty sure that's what they told me.
