Well ..... i can honestly say i screwed it up big time ..... but its me we talking about and those that know me know i will always try and find the silverlining to all disasters......
Here is the back ground..... Ladded myself a residency at a night club in Durban, South africa playing on a wednesday night.... anyway using my own setup because the main dance floor is closed on a wednesday and i played on the smaller floor but did not like the setup they had, anyway rocked the house for 3 weeks straight and they loved me!!!!
The owners then approached and offered me the friday night slot !! double pay, main dance floor ... heaven !!
now i had to downsize on bitrate to save on harddrive space, all good..... figured ... main dj box would have an allright system ...... so left my rig at home, grabbed my ..... urgh CD case as back up and headed out.....
well half an hour late i manage to get everything up and ready .... aghggh i aint evven going into the details but here is the just
WHEN YOU ASSUME YOU WILL ALWAYS MAKE A ............ASS/U/ME (an ass of you and me)
the equipment was shocking to say the least! the mixer way too old so at 1 click it would be toooo much and 1 click down tooo little ! the CDJ 100's worked like a dream ..... but dumb ass grabbed my MP3 cd case and well ya.............. but i always had VDJ to keep me going strong ................. that is if when i dropped the bitrate i should of sent to original folder......... but over looked that small detail so now i dont know where any of my music is etc etc .........
BASICALLY EVERYTHING THAT COULD GO WRONG DID ... I WAS AMATURE TO SAY THE LEAST AND WHAT EXCELENT REP I HAD FROM THE PAST 3 WEDNESDAYS ... SHATTERED!!
So here is what you all been waiting for........................ the silver linning ......
1- NO MATTER WHAT !!! ALWAYS TAKE YOUR OWN RIG ............. YOU PLAY ON IT EVERY DAY AND YOU KNOW HOW IT WORKS .... NEVER LEAVE THINGS TO CHANCE!!
2 - OPEN THE DAMN CD CASE BEFORE LUGGING IT WITH YOU SO THAT YOU HAVE THE RIGHT S#@$T
3 - ABOVE ALL ELSE ............. DONT GO MESSING WITH YOUR LAPTOP OR VDJ FOR THAT MATTER ON THE DAY YOU HAVE YOUR GIG !!
4 - HELL ............ THERE IS ALWAYS NEXT TIME TO BLOW THEM AWAY WHEN THEY EXPECTING A CRAP DJ !!
5 - KEEP YOUR CHIN UP, YOUR EARS MUFFED AND YOUR MIXING HANDS FREE!!

Surprisingly YES !! but purely for the awesome performance the wednesday prior !! thank god the main owner saw that and understood..... but i still played and had the dance floor full at times but it was just shoking........... from a personal point of view although everyone said sh$t happens and i must not stress so much about it ................ but alas music is my passion and i have high personal standards !

Mmmmm....... share with me your worst Dj Nightmsre brother .......... sounds like it could be a very interesting topic .... not to mention a bit of a confidence booster to those that have been to hell and back to know that they are not the only ones that make mistakes ....

A Man and His Music
I have so many, I could write a book. Don't worry, you have more in store for you. Just keep backups for everything. I also plan to get to all mobile gigs 2 hr before start.
For the life of me, I don't know why you would lower your quality of music, to save hard drive space. It would be cheaper and faster to get bigger hard drives.
Trust me, it could have been worst.

I have had those nights...I would call it being in a "Rut".
No matter what I did, I couldn't get out of it.
It doesn't happen anymore(knock on wood), but it used to frustrate the heck out of me.

Have you considered putting your collection onto an external USB hardrive? MAX portability. No folders, just all the music on the 2nd drive. I don't place any music on folders or lables - just on a 2nd internal hard disk I have labeled as MP3 DUMP. Your music is always on that drive you know where it'll be and don't have to worry about storage space either, it dosn't slow you main system down, the stuff of life!!
Tough break on grabbbing the wrong cd case - ouch!!.
I don't have a real bad dj'ing catastrophy story: normal stuff really, beer spilled on the mixer and having to switch it out while keeping the dance floor going Protecting the gear during New Years Champaine bottle blasts, Amp Shorting out and one side dieing during a night. Normal Stuff for a nightclub that's been going strong for 21 years my friends

i had one side of the mains die on the mixer one time....i just kept it to myself and daisy chained the two speakers and i really don't think anyone noticed.....

Have had too many bad experiences with external drives !!
1st time round poor planning .......... had all my Mp's on an external drive totaling close on 23000 of them on a 400gig and lost the lot ! with no back ups .......... ! it dropped off my mixtable while i was practicing at the house.
2nd time round i lost 3 drives ! my 250, 120 and 80 gig on my desktop when i was backing up.... had a spike that literally corrupted all my files !!
just dumb luck i guess !!
