There is no need for preamp, as VDJ has software preamp:)
Hardware preamp would in theory work slightly better, but many cards that needs software preamp are beloved by VDJ users (Such as Maya44 usb)
The important part is how well the card is built, its driver, and its latency.
ASIO drivers is needed for good timecode support, and low latency working mode is prefferable if you want to scratch much, and want super responsive and good sounding scratch.
Hercules is not up to match for superfast Uzi scratching (a bit slow asio drivers), but works ok for general tc use.
Such cards as Maya44usb, U46dj, Presonic Firewire, and more gives super low latency and great sounding scratch :)

lol but i have the Maya44 PCI and the ASIO is supported on this PCI
