when I use my existing mps files with virtual DJ I can't see the artists of the songs - why - what can I do to see them

where don't you managed to see the artists of the songs?
in virtualdj's database, or on the decks?
so, you can rename your files like this:
artist - title (version)
if your mps files are yet so this, you have to re-write the TAG..I think!!
