Hello, I use encryption on my internal disk.
40 gig partition dedicated to music and is whole encrypted.

I use TrueCrypt. It's free and I don't see any performance hits.
You can see the speed test for your pc for different algorhytms used, while the harddisk is moving to another sector the cpu is decoding it. So the difference between using and not using is not more than 5%.

What is the benefit of encryption? It does not improve the sound or video quality. It places undue strain on your system. Are you afraid somone might steal your hard drive?

if you use encrypted file it has no header
so looks like random data.
Also you can have encrupted volume inside your encrypted volume
(i didn't see to much slow down so i am using it) on the primary encrypted disk i just have some nude chicks (so it looks reasonable that i encrypt something) :-)

aslo you can use whole partition not only the file ....

I believe the reason you would want to encrypt you data is in case you LOSE it or someone that is substituting for you while you are out sick or something doesn't steal your songs, and in turn offer to do the job for less with YOUR music/videos.... am I right?
