Is there any way I can connect my laptop straight to a preamp and what cables are needed? I am purposely excluding the external mixer because I want to use the one with atomixmp3. what would the sound quality be like if I use this method, or if its not possible at all.

the cables will depend on the connections on your amp and laptop. typically one might require a headphone to rca y-cable. I hope you have considered the method by which you can preview/monitor. good luck.
