looks like it sorts by... last play ...?
Is it?

and wouldn't it serve more use as original sort button?
something I've wondered and forgotten about for a few years.

That's a side effect of writing tags, it's "original sort order"
but using system file access time as a reference in folder gives the same result as last play, unless new files are added
