Sometimes when I am beginning to encode, (picking up from the last DJ) on my first click, the broadcast box says ERROR which indicates the stream isn't available yet. My question: do I keep clicking on broadcast or do I wait for VDJ to grab?

In theory you can wait, since VirtualDJ will try reconnect.
If not, you need to press once more to stop the broadcast (Even if not connected), then click again to connect .. .that works ;-)
