Recently purchased virtual dj pro with understanding it supports Traktor s4 mk1 after connecting and following all instructions it does not work and vdj does not recognise the controller any advice on how to resolve this issue

Traktor S4 MKI is indeed not supported and probably will not be,

Option 1: Try this ver7 Addon https://www.virtualdj.com/addons/14443/Traktor_Kontrol_S4.html With a few adjustments, it may work with ver 8 (2020/2021) of VirtualDJ but not 100% - you may need to do a bit of custom mapping.
Option 2: Use a different MIDI controller from the ones that is officially supported https://www.virtualdj.com/products/hardware.html
Option 3: Stop your Pro subscription and use your controller with the software that came with.
