Topic: DMX controller VS software

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi, I know very little about DMX so I wanted to asked the group for advise. I want to use it for mobile gigs. I would use it for up-lighting, 2-4 moving heads, a gig bar & LED facade / curtain. I am not sure which way to go on this. Do I get a controller or use software? If I go software can I run it on the same laptop while using VDJ? Any advise would be much appreciated.

Thank you

As the saying goes, it's swings and roundabouts. Each has advantages and disadvantages.

With hardware, you don't need a dongle (which is typically restricted to use with one software) and you will be able to directly control any light you hang off it.

With software, each light will require a "fixture file" (similar to the way VDJ needs mapping for each controller), and if your particular light is not listed in the software, you will have to write your own "fixture file", or try and find another user of the same software who has the exact same light as you, who is willing to share. The files are unique to each software, so won't be compatible between vendors.

Hardware is less "visual" though, and you may find it hard to program (hardware can be quirky). Software can be very visual, even down to animations of your setup, once you get over the hurdle of the mapping.

Hi,
controller $120 usd, i have and elation 192 controller, and the software I use for a bigger gigs I have a Mydmx 2.1
software $200-400 , no limits. Visualizer. You can programming without installing your rig. Save a lot of scenes in less time ,

For uplighting is good a small 3-4 channel controller.
I really like the phisical knobs and faders

The new product es mydmx Go. Check on the adj.
and for integration with vdj is the Chauvet showxpress

Good luck.

I use QLight+ (https://www.qlcplus.org/) on the same laptop as VDJ with a Lixada USB interface connected to wireless Donner DMX transmitter and receivers. I also have a touchscreen as a second monitor I run the light controller on so I can control it with touch. It took some time to get all the fixtures programmed the way I wanted and it seemed every time I did a gig for 6 months I changed things afterwards, but its been a while now since I felt it needed changing. Nothing was expensive and it puts on a pretty good show!
