This is probably an easy answer but I can't find it anywhere.
While in the automix mode I have a playlist of a few hundred songs in the sidelist. I want to move a song that is located in the middle of my playlist... instantly move that song below the current song that is playing. so that it will be positioned to play next. How is that done with a simple click?

set a custom button or keyboard key to to Automix_add_next

Simple, drag & drop.

As said above, a button assigned as automix_add_next will do what you want.
If you want to use mouse (and the track you want to move to Automix is at the Sidelist) , grab the track from the Sidelist, keep mouse down, move it over the Automix button at the bottom of the Sideview, wait for 1-2 seconds for the Automix to be displayed (dont release mouse) and then move it under the currently played track and release mouse.
