My MacBook Pro was overheating with the fans running flat out constantly after installing the new macOS High Sierra.
In the developer forums I found a fix, in Messages > Preferences > Accounts > Settings. Unchecked the box for the new feature "Enable Messages on iCloud" and leave it unchecked.
Seems to be working so far for me, my MBP has never been so quiet. ;-)
