Topic: Timecode configuration with a 2 channel mixer

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

When trying to configure the Timecode function in Virtual DJ, is it possible to output Channel 1 to Deck 1 and Channel 2 to Deck 2? The only options i'm able to find are Channels 1&2 to Deck 1 & Channels 3&4 to Deck 2.

But I'm using the American Audio MXR 10 which only has 2 channels. So I'm only able to output to 1 Deck. Does anyone know how to get both working? I can't seem to get this question answered when going through support. Please help

The XLR mixer output goes to your amp. The time code "squeal" from the two vdj8 time code cd's (or vinyl's) in the players goes to the two pair's of MIDILOG INPUTS on your mixer.
The players (probably cdj's) only control the basic functions in VDJ8, and are not soundcards, and do not control volumes. That will be done by the mixer. You will need to install the mixer driver & any support software. Ch1 & Ch2 both need setting to line if using cdj's or phono for vinyl.
Hence your VDJ8 outputs are mixer soundcard ch 1 & 2 master, and mixer soundcard ch 3& 4 headphones.
Your VDJ inputs are mixer soundcard CH1 & CH2
Note CH 1 = ch 1 & 2 but they are a different stereo pair from the outputs, and this similarly apples to CH2.
Now all you need to do is configure the timecode in the VDJ8 settings.

I can't be certain about what I've wrote since I don't have one, but it seems straight forward.

It looks like a good, and cheap way to use timecode. I'm impressed!

I'm not sure what your American Audio 10 MXR VDJ LE licence permits?

If you open the channels drop-down in vdj, there should be an option Chan 1 (mono), Chan 2 (mono), or alternatively 'More...' so you can select 1 channel for both left and right outputs.

Maybe im technically challenged... or im just not wording it right. Im currently on a trial version of pro. In LE i was able to use the midi controllers on the mixer (American Audio MXR10) very easily! Literally plug in and play.

When trying to use timecode (vinyl in my case) i can only get 1 deck to work. It also was very easy to get it working, but I can only use 1 side.

When I go into config.... set up for dual timecode control. Thats where I see the option of Channel 1&2 on Deck 1 and Channel 3&4 on Deck 2.

My mixer (the mxr10) only has 2 channels. Does anyone know if I can configure Channel 1 on the mixer to Deck 1 in Virtual DJ... and Channel 2 to Deck 2?

If so... this is the best value on the market. If not, it so close! There must be a way!

This is my take..

Two types of audio settings.

Timecode inputs CH1 & CH2

Audio output from VDJ. (this is the same as normal, even when using timecode cd's)
master ch1 & ch2 headphones ch3 & ch4

I'm sure it easily works.

You have bought two HQ DVS timecode vinyls for version 8?

Im using Serato timecode vinyls... saw it on dj briansredd youtube.

But he was using the mxr 14.... a 4 channel mixer. I think thats the difference. Feels like something that could be easily fixed for 2 channel mixer/midi ontrollers like the mx10 though. Especially since vdj comes bundled with it

Serato stuff is fine as long as you select it in the timecode options.

Let me get this right.
You have two vinyl decks which both have Serato timecode spinning, and their audio outputs are fed into inputs CH1 & CH2 respectively.
They are being use to control the transport elements of deck 1 and deck 2.
Both the phono input switches on the back of your mixer are selected ?
Using your mixer you expect VDJ8 to mix two songs, and output the mix.

If the above is true it should be easy.

Essentially, yes.

But, the the timecode options in vdj say Channel 1&2 Deck 1, Channel 3 & 4 Deck 2.

As far as i can tell, there is not an option for Channel 1 Deck 1, Channel 2 Deck 2.

The timecode functionality on the side that works is flawless! I just can't figure out how to get both to work.

Ill try to post a video tomorrow

"But, the the timecode options in vdj say Channel 1&2 Deck 1, Channel 3 & 4 Deck 2"

master---------------------------your mixer (asio) ch1 & ch2
headphones-------------------your mixer (asio) ch3 & ch4
timecode 1---------------------CH1 your mixer ch1 & ch2
timecode 2---------------------CH2 your mixer ch3 & ch4

Select master, headphones, timecode 1, timecode 2 ! Use the drop down menu's.
Master and headphones are outputs.
Timecodes are inputs.

Replace master and headphones with deck 1 and deck 2.
The mixer has hardware faders and headphone output.
I've just got the vdj8 manual.

Sorry for confusing you.

It will do timecode for you.

Assuming your vdj8 le licence is for your mixer then it will work but maybe only for 10min. A pro or plus licence may be necessary.

Maybe I'll have to call support when its back up on the 29th.... I'm not sure where to find those options.

Must be on a different tab?

Im looking under config -> sound setup

Let's try again.

Inputs-------------Timecodes-----Chan !&2 Deck 1 / Chan 3 &4 Deck2
Outputs-----------External Mixer----Deck 1 : Chan 1&2 /Deck 2 : Chan 3&4
Soundcard------ Asio Driver-------American Audio asio driver

Click apply.
See if that works.

The American Audio midilog faders are a bit odd. They are real analog mixer hardware even though their movements can be seen in Virtualdj.
Effectively it's just a normal mixer, hence I selected the external mixer setting.

I repeat again that it is simple.
It's just that I have not been very efficient in helping you.

I am using vdj7... trial version of pro

Should i uninstall and go with 8? Can i get a 20 trial version of Pro if I do that?

Thank you for your patience btw.... I appreciate it

I think VDJ8 is vastly superior to VDJ7.
It's worth getting VDJ8 now.
Can i get a 20 trial version of Pro if I do that?
You may have a licence problem.
It may only run for 10 min. before requiring a restart.
Give it a go, you have nothing to lose.
