Topic: Beatgrid // working with old tunes

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Yo Peeps!

I'd like to play a set with really old tunes from the 60s and 70s. But most of those tracks were recorded with a human drummer, so the tempo is all over the place.
I'd really like to fix those tracks in order to beatmatch in a smooth way.

I'm using VirtualDJ 8 Pro, and i couldnt find a way to tap the beatgrid manually.

Please help!

Just bear in mind that adding beatgrid anchors (as mentioned in the video) does not make the track play at a steady tempo.

What it does is allow the beat grid to vary up & down along with the track - so you end up with an unsteady track and an unsteady beat grid.

Also the changes in tempo are not displayed anywhere, so you can't monitor the variations in either the track or the grid as it plays.

I've not done any testing, but I'd imagine that the results of syncing two variable tempo tracks (each with different variations) would be "interesting". :-)

You're best off using ableton to warp the tracks to a constant bpm, you could use the variable beat grid and also add action POIs to change the pitch so it sounds consistant but I think that's too much pain for anyone.

Thank you all for the quick help!

I'll try how far i can fix the tracks with the variable bpm function, but i guess the ableton warp thing will fix the tracks the way i'd like to have them.

Aight, thanks a lot. Will check that out in the evening.
