I want to use my mic with VDJ effects when I record my mixes and was wondering if I need a xlr to usb cord connected to my laptop or just a normal mic xlr connected to my DDJ SX

I'm sure someone may chime in on this if i'm wrong.
I also use a DDJ-SX and i know you would need the software to see it as a line-in
to be able to use effects.
not sure on the SX but if you did add a USB Mic and set it to line-in that should do what
you expect.
anyone ever try the dedicated mic on their DJ controller as a Line-in?
i suppose i'll give this a try later today and share what i found out. Hope this helps!!

It depends totally on the specifications of the individual controller - or rather its internal USB audio interface.
If the USB audio interface only has outputs then there's no way a mic plugged into the controller can be routed back to VDJ - that'd need an input.
The DDJ SX is an example of this. The USB audio interface only has two stereo outputs - one for master, the other for headphones.
No inputs (on the internal USB audio interface with the computer) so there's no way to get a signal to VDJ over USB from something plugged into the SX (such as a mic).

So can I simple use my regular mic Shure sm58 and plug in a xlr to usb cable into my laptop or do I need a certain usb mic

Hmmm, well I suppose you could in theory. I see there are lots of cheap cables and the Shure XLR-USB gadget costs more than the SM58 itself!
I would be concerned about the quality of the circuitry in the cheap cables.
Buying yourself a USB 'podcast mic' is likely to cost just as much as getting an external audio interface with an XLR input (where you could have some control over things).

But the SX is taking over control of your VDJ and the SX is a stand-alone mixer. I don't believe you can use the VDJ effects for your mic while the SX is connected.
Also how do you record your mixes? VDJ can't record them for you, since the mic signal isn't going trough VDJ if you would have the USB solution?
I believe it's easier and cheaper to buy a mic controller between the mic and SX that will make the effect for you.

Audacity is what I use to record my mixes.

Then you need a second mixer. Audacity doesn't record 2 sources simoultaniously.
If you connect your SX and your Microphone to an second mixer and connect that second mixer to your line in of your computer / laptop?
Or maybe you can record your music with VDJ and your (usb) microphone with Audacity?
But I still think you can't use the VDJ effects for your mic this way.
