Topic: Creating a new business section

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hey guys,
So I am about to embark on a new adventure into Djing. I have the opportunity to shadow a company and potentially become part of their business. Now my ultimate goal is to create my own business and provided it works out I will be able to sub contract through them. What I don't know how to do is start my own business. I know there is a ton of info on the Canadian Government website and Alberta Government website but what are the things that I should be looking at? For example what insurance, Music licenses as a mobile DJ, what do I register the business as? (A proprietorship, partnership, LTD, Inc, so on.)

Is there anyway that we can maybe create a whole new folder (like General Discussion) on creating a business? I would ask for a sticky but there are going to be differences between Canada and the US, UK, and so on. Furthermore there might even be differences between provinces/states, I don't know, but it would help guys like me out as how to approach this kind of a thing for creating a small business and what to look for, what mistakes maybe others have made.

I know this is a Forum for Virtual Dj as a product but to me this is more. I see this as a life style and how far in you want to take it is up to you but just an idea.
Or if anyone has a link for this specific topic could you maybe share?

Thanks,
Brendan

I'm not comfortable with a sticky or new forum on this topic as it might encourage more cowboys to start up. Everything business related should be in a locked forum away from the general public and bedroom DJ's.

My advice to you, get an accountant and get them to do everything.

Brendan check out this site it has information for start ups and established business.
It is an international site so should be able to provide you with answers.
The structure of your business is dependent on the size.
Initially I would suggest, proprietor or sole trader since you are contracting to another business and not to the client direct.
The structure determines the tax you have to pay.

Speak to a good accountant before you commit to anything.
