Topic: Your equipment and temperature?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I was wanting to know what everyone thinks about the effects of temperature, hot or cold on your powered speakers and other equipment in a mobile Dj rig after or before the booking. Last night I had a gig and it was about 18 degrees overnight, I would have liked to keep my stuff in the van. I didn't want to take the chance so I didn't, but after a long night it would have been nice. Now I know that bringing your speakers in from the cold and thumping the crap out of them is not a good idea, but what about overnight and just bringing in to store? Thoughts??

the temperature should not be a problem, but moisture is, if the van is ultra dry then there should not be a problem, you could put a couple of moisture traps (the chemical types used in cravans and RV's), if you want to be on the safe side

I agree. I live in TX, it would be nice to store stuff in my garage and not have it clutter my 2nd bedroom, but with the humidity we get in the summers that is just not possible. However, 1 night exposure should not be too bad. I had a gig Fri and Sat this past weekend. I just left everything in the UHaul van in my garage. I have done this many times in the past and never a problem. Also having good build quality gear helps.

So here is a funny situation that has to do with temperature...I own reloop terminal mix 2...all summer long with high temperatures(live in Greece)not a single issue...but in the winter things ghance....when the westher is cold I get crackling sounds for about 10-15 minutes until the circuits of the controller are warmed up by the indoor temperature...so I go to my venue earlier....learned to live with it...by the way its prooven and accepted by reloop which I contacted by e-mails..but no fix yet

I think there is some truth in low temps causing issues.

With mechanical devices like CD Players, disc drives and Fans. The grease used to lubricate the motors and other parts can become more viscous (Thicker and hevier) at lower temps. This can hinder operation to some extent. CD Players can become very tempramental at low temps.

There has long been a school of thought that suggests audio equipment never sounds "at its best" until warmed up and run in for a period of time.

I think a far greater concern for the mobile sound system is sudden change in teperature environments. Taking gear from a cold Van or store into a hot humid area causes condensation to form on the surfaces and internal workings of equipent. Until this dries out all kinds of strange behavior and in the worst case total failure can result. Operation of equipment in humid atmospheres is not an issue in itself as long as the equipment is given time to settle to the temperature in the area where it is to be used without appling any power. Once the temperature has normalised after 1/2 to 1 hr depending on the size of the gear. Operating should not pose too many concerns.

Cold equipment, into a warm van equals condensation, bad idea. Especially for moving parts.
