Who's booked for New Years Eve already, and do you have an idea as to what you'll be playing? Gotta play the traditional Auld Lang Syne at midnight when the ball drops obviously.

You can only play to your audience on the night, don't know why anyone one plans a night, you gotta go with the flow.

I have my genres planned! I'm getting paid and I'm playing what they specifically ask for hah. The only thing I don't have yet is a damn new years countdown drop. Grrr I can't find a good one!

I'm sure there's a couple out there you might be able to use... lol

Something I knocked together, I could never find a video file for the song.

Might do for one of your midnight party pieces, get the original file from here...

I have the first 3 tracks in mind, plus my countdown video. Other than that, I NEVER PLAN MY SETS. That only leads to crappy crowd response.

I am starting to plan for my nye set :-). Im new an cant just look out an know exactly what to play, if you can cheers to you. So far my plan is to try to come up with "blocks" of music about an hour long im hopeing to have six so i can play the one i think is best at the time. My guests have asked for some sing alongs so i will take the song requests in the first block or two an then have an all request block. I still have alot to learn I think that if you are new like me have an idea of how you would like your nye to play out.

When I say plan, I dont mean putting together song after song for an exact full set. I mean those few specific tracks that you know you definitely want to play that night.

Dunno man, to me NYE is just like any other night at a bar or club except people get dressed. Amateur club/bar go'er and drinkers come out and think they can bombard you with request after request cause it THEIR NIGHT. That and club/bars will make more money this time than most any other night in the year. That's why I charge more.

So yeah, other than a countdown and aulde lang syne, its just business as usual for me. Set up at 9:30. Get people dancing, every now and again switch up so some folks would leave the floor and get drinks. Deal with MORE drunks than usual trying to program my playlist all night. Last call at 1:45. Pack up at 2AM. Try not to get pulled over on the way home and hopefully, I am in bed by 3:30. No different that any night. :D Except my check is bigger.

You get a check xcakid, i wish i got one :-). Im just playing for friends.

..and hopefully it doesn't bounce. I already have the money going toward the purchase of a set of Reloop RP8000

BIG +1 X I got the same issue except a bit longer up 9 am to gentlemens club residency for 11a-6p rush outta there 45 minute drive to get to private gig gear already to go at 8pm play til 2am home by 3am have a beer or 6 then pass out wake up unload and BACK to Gentlemens club residency for 4p to 2a New Years Day

I know most of my party is into rock any thoughts on what songs to play? Should i try to beatmatch or just fade i can beat match but not pro.

Go with the flow or create a flow...

You can plan a set or sets and still read a crowd and respond to it...but if you're playing at an EDM event you're not going to look at the crowd and think "what they really need right now is some jazz" - proper planning prevents poor performance, but there's no rule that says you must stick to it 100%.

In nearly forty years of dj'ing I have never even thought about music and what I was going to play until I walked through a venue door, even at residencies, every night is special, I see the crowd and like most people I work with it and guide them... simple.

Trying to plan a night seems as though the guy behind the decks will have a misconception of the night he is about to do before he even gets there, which to me is defeating the object of why we are being employed.

Again, I go to a venue/event with an open mind and take it from there, I feed off the audience and they feed off me, quite soon were in sync... love it!

I liken it to a boxing match, it wouldn't be wise to walk into a ring with an opponent you haven't studied, therefore you study and create a game plan to expose the weaknesses of your opponent. It's not dumb and rigid where you say in round 1 I'm going to throw 15 jabs, 8 crosses and 1 hay maker then the crowd go wild...or in the DJ case a constant planned sequence, this obviously backfires everytime.

I'm always looking for a knockout...surviving or winning on points is not the game plan, but sometimes it'll have to do.

People do what they want to do, me, I must be doing something right, still working week in week out and been asked to do NYE parties three years in advance, but do what ever floats your boat.

It's very subjective and personal. That being said, there is nothing wrong with having a list on the side, just in case you get distracted.
