Hey all,
So the only major gig I have done is a small wedding for my cousin in the summertime. I really really want to get out to a crowd because I need to know how I'm doing. I do mixes and post them on sound cloud and mix cloud, share them on Facebook, Twitter Google + and share and share the crap out of them. I am getting NO feedback other then the odd friend that says hey that's good (Like the same 3 people for every mix).

I am starting to plan a Hall Party for February to get out there and show myself and some friends and their friends what I can do. I'm trying to rely on word of mouth but will be looking into getting fliers as well. I'm thinking of getting some business cards made up, burn a bunch of copies of my mixes to give out at the event. I will have another friend with me that has been DJing for a number of years now as a Co-DJ. I guess I could call him my headliner unless I can get some one with a good name here in the city to headline. I am thinkin that would just eat into my budget/profit even more tho.

I am trying to plan this for 100 people give or take with a $5 cover and $5 drinks. What I am asking here is has anyone taken on a task like this and how has it worked out for you?

At what point was/is it profitable or a loss? I know this is a bit of a loaded question but has it worked out for you with 100 people and charging $5 cover and $5 drinks?

I believe my buddy and I both have a numark Mixdeck but I don't know if he has Serato or VDJ. How do you switch from DJ to DJ smoothly? I've never done this and due to my personal life trying to get into play a club just isn't going to happen any time soon. Even as much as I want it to.

For those that have maybe taken this on before is there anything I should watch out for?
I will be getting a liquor license, PAL insurance, get people qualified to serve booze, but not sure what I can do for security. Between the two of us I think we have all the equipment we need with lights and stuff like that. Am I missing something?

I just can't sit here and only be a Bedroom DJ and go no where like I've done with playing guitar and skateboarding. Never tried to get in a band and never tried to go get sponsored even tho I had big plans to go far.

Any and ALL help will be greatly appreciated.
Brendan

Nothing ventured, nothing gained right! A DJ friend of mine suggested something similar, rent a hall, hire a bartender, promote the hell out of it and see what happens.
I was worried we wouldn't cover the costs, but if you do it right it could be profitable and at the very least you have a great time, gain exposure and its a stepping stone.

Switching between DJ's is easy running through a mixer, thats not a problem.
Sound and lighting are the main things, what do you guys have between the two of you in that department?

I would try to find two hottie bartenders willing to work for tips and two bouncers for security. In my area I can get experienced bouncers for $125 cash. Guys who can throw drunks out gently and defuse situations. A nasty brawl could ruin your night and trash any chances for future events, so security is a must. Key thing is guys with experience and not gym rats who will injure people and land you in court.

Ya right you don't succeed if you don't try.
I still have to get over to my buddies place to see what all he has for lights but worst comes to worst I can always rent some. Lights are cheep as hell to rent. I know he has a mixer, Mixdeck, full speaker set up but I also have 2 Yamaha speakers with a built in mixer. I also have a light I bought of Kijiji but I just use it for fun to put on in the basement. I could bring it out anyway.
The only thing I'm worried about is just breaking even. Hell I'll take a $100 loss even but if I can make some money then great.
I have involved a few people to help me promote it and have a possible party planer so I'll find security somehow. Good call on the gym monkeys too lol.
