Is it possible that i can only use the APC40 just to control my sampler on virtual Dj without having to use my mouse to move the faders and hitting the play button. I have manually programmed the faders using the APC but cannot program the play button at all.

The sampler play buttons are mappable (in the full Pro version of Virtual DJ).
What exactly are you doing when you try to "program the play button"?

bare with me here I'm not in front of VDJ now, but when I go to map it I do the following 1. click on i think the learn icon and push a button/knob
to identify the key and than click the icon below to assign that key to whatever part of the shin i choose to. which I have done so with the faders only thus far and that's it.
