How do beginning Dj's avoid copyright when putting themself out there?
( I'm pretty new to this and realized I might have copyright issues when I posted to soundcloud and my mix got disabled immediately)

soundcloud is the wrong place to post a mix... It was designed with producers in mind to share their original material, you should use mixcloud instead as it gives credit the original artist and helps facilitate the selling of their productions.

In theory you are of course not legally allowed to share any mix with other producers/artists material on it, without their consent.
But Dj mixes and mixtapes always been in a gray area, the record labels looked the other way, as long as it was for promotional use (not selling it).
And even selling mixtapes rarely gets any attention but can....
But with the digital area of youtube, soundcloud, mixcloud, hulkshare, etc ... they are forced to implement digital detection of songs, and your mix gets removed in seconds if its detected to have one or more songs from a take down notice.
And this stuff will just get worse and worse I predict. The US internet and copyright laws have made it possible.
For now, the hosts of such files, have sort of a safe haven if they do implement removals of songs by DMCA notice, and if they have pro active algorithms in place to auto detect copy right songs.
There are a few that are still slow at implementing pro active stuff, like mixcloud, zippyshare etc.. but they will too.
But you as a DJ dont have to worry - its just super annoying to have your mix removed automatically all the time from different hosts

Yes Mixcloud.com is designed for DJ mixes, but truthfully I think more people use soundcloud so it's worth trying both. Don't worry if they disable your mix on soundcloud, you won't get the police knocking at your door or anything!! It's just an automatic process.
