Topic: Help for your Halloween set lists!

So I received quite a bit of help a few weeks ago with a set that was a little out of my typical Genre. To give back a little, I put together a full expression of Filter words to help you guys find all those songs in your library that you may have forgotten about or missed, for your Halloween sets.

The following expression just needs to be pasted in your filter window:

title contains "Thriller" or title contains "Devil" or title contains "Monster" or title contains "Evil" or title contains "Hell" or title contains "Witch" or title contains "Demon" or title contains "Pumpkin" or title contains "Costume" or title contains "Mask" or title contains "Disguise" or title contains "Ghost" or title contains "Skeleton" or title contains "Nightmare" or title contains "Poison" or title contains "Coffin" or title contains "Tomb" or title contains "Grave" or title contains "The Purple People Eater"

Of course there are more words, etc that I could use. I just found that these produced the best results. I am open to suggestions on anything I have missed!

In the future Don when setting out your tags in "genre" you may want to set it out something similar to this... other type/h/ween

Mine are set out something like this DANCE/PARTY/H/WEEN or ROCK/H/WEEN but you get the idea for future reference.

so if you put in a search H/WEEN you get all your previously tagged tunes.

I always use upper case when doing tags... eyesight isn't as good as it was, lol.
 
Thanks, I do a similar thing in Genre. Dance, Pop, etc. Caps is deffinately easier to see, but have not had the need yet as I would have to re tag everything.

This was to find all those songs already in your library that you may have missed. Then they can be per innately tagged if you wish. But for Holidays, I find that the filters will always find those songs and all the new ones that get added. So I have scan lists (Filter / Smart Playlists) in iTunes, then a seperate DJ pick list slimmed down to just the good well known stuff.

I will say, the only negative to come out of this so far is that itch or whatever they are calling it these days... Has a problem when you have allot of iTunes play lists. Maxes out the memory or something. I choose iTues for the lists because everybody seems to be able to use thier lists, so I am not locked into 1 software. If I want to change, there is little to no work playlist wise. I can sync them to an iPod (for emergency backup only). Last, at very small parties, I use iTunes instead and can offer that my guests can browse and request songs on thier own from thier phones and I still have remote master control. Way better than that remote app that was abandoned.

Nice idea, will definitively catch a lot of songs for the night ;)

would add "halloween" to that filter ... to get theme songs such as;
Marilyn Manson - This Is Halloween,
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Halloween
The Misfits - Halloween

etc..

And maybe 'warp' to get the #1 halloween song of all; 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' Soundtrack - "The Time Warp"..

and what about all the other classic such as :
- Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells Pt. 1 (Theme From 'The Exorcist')
- Rockwell - "Somebody's Watching Me"
- Talking Heads - "Psycho Killer"
- Ramones - Pet Cemetery
- The Meteors - She’s A Zombie Now
- The Doors - People Are Strange


The filter is a good idea, it will catch a lot of useful songs... very cool ;)

Maybe one could use that filter to auto catch many good songs songs, then drag and drop that search to a Virtual Folder/ playlist.. .
And add those songs that the filter didnt catch due to not having a 'horror' like title..
 
Great ideas too! That was kind of the idea, to fill the rest of the night with other creative songs. It really helped me do an awesome set last night. Got TONS of positive feedback.

Actually my filter missed "Janet Jackson - Black cat" also and that worked well on my crowd.

They gave me some good stuff too. Definitely planned on updating. The main idea is to help with content. Too many people think VDJ 8 is the answer. Sure it will be awesome, but filters like these can help people find better or more creative content to play for our patrons. When dealing with thousands of songs, I can assume that all of us have those favorites that we always play. Hopefully this can help us out of the same old "rut" we can sometimes get stuck in.

Agreed ... I think filter folders (auto smart search) is one of the most overlooked , and underrated features of the software..
They are awesome to populate content for a gig, or have auto folders for a specific theme, or compatible song look up, or just standard good ones such as "most played" "newly added" etc

Another good one, but a bit of a stretch - "Gnarls Barkley - Crazy"
