We always ask local pubs or hall if they can donate there space for the night, we explain to them what were doing and why. The public is always welcome so the bar still makes money off of drinks. We ask if they can provide any drink specials as it can draw more people in. Next we book acts, now this can either be who you want or if the family has any one they'd like to play. After the acts are booked we hit up local businesses and see if they can donate any goods. Now this can be anything from t-shirts, tattoos, hotel suites, passes to the zoo or water parks anything really. After you've done all that you can now use those for raffles which will be held throughout the night and that's how you raise money as well as any free will donations people wanna give.
You might have to rent the space but most will do a benefit at a deep discount. Remember to remind people why they are there and what your trying to do which is raise money for the family.

Hope that helps and good luck,
Huey
