For a beginner DJ, I recommend learning how to mix. It is without a doubt one of the most important part of DJing. Search YouTube for "How to DJ" and there's hundreds of videos for you.

Practice.
Every waking spare hour, practice.
When you think you got it down, practice some more.
12 months in, I'm still finding new ways to manipulate sounds, and new ways to push my controller.
Did I mention practice already?

1- Learn your music!
2- PRACTICE (NO PRACTICE, NO PROGRESS!)
3- Record your sets, including practice to see what you did right and what you're doing wrong.
4- There are plenty How-to books and videos, find the best ones possible to learn your techniques
5- Be yourself (Don't try to be some other DJ)
6- Continue to be a student! (Had I stayed in that old school mindset, I would've got left behind)
7- Don't become a MUMMY DJ! Learn how to mix with your ears and not stare at your laptop the whole time!
8- Take time to study the history (You'll have a greater appreciation for the ART)
9- Use the software that makes you comfortable
10- Get to the point you have a NO FEAR OF THE MIXER MENTALITY! (See #2 again)
Most importantly, KNOW YOUR ROLE AND ROCK THE HOUSE HOMEY ;)
Happy DJ-ing,
