Hello I am just starting off as a DJ and would like some tips for lighting. I am looking to play smaller venues like weddings, small parties, etc and would like to know what type of lighting you would recommend. Thank you

Yes I apologize groovendj. I am new here and was not completely familiar with how this website works. Thank you for the advice. I was thinking about getting the American dj jelly fish, would that be recommended?

Starting off I wouldn't purchase one HUGE light. I bought the American DJ Micro Galaxian Laser for $100 off GC and it's incredible. Couple of these with a fog machine and you got yourself a rave.

However, I'd only buy a fog machine if you buy other lights. What a fog machine does, is it makes the entire laser beam visible. Without a fog machine, you'll just have a bunch of colorful dots all over the room. When you start making money DJing, I'd start to upgrade your fog machine, which is what I'm doing but with equipment.

I don't think a fog machine is a priority these days.
Here in the UK many venues will not allow fog or haze to be used, because they have smoke detectors. Maybe in the USA it's different.
As I said in my previous answer, a pair of LED moonflowers is a good starting point (best use pairs of lights for symmetry).
Follow that up with a pair of LED washes - PARs or strips.

I didn't know that. Thanks! I don't know if you have sprinklers in the UK? If you do, you can use a fog machine around these because the fog isn't hot enough to break the glass and set off the sprinklers. What kind of lasers do they use in huge Tiesto-style raves? http://chewthedirt.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/rave1.jpg

We do have sprinklers, but I don't think they're anywhere near as common here as in the US.

Heat triggered sprinkler systems are, as you suggest not realy an issue. The problem (As Groovin points out) are smoke detection systems. Hazers and Smoke Machines certainly will trigger them. This limits the use of smoke to venues which have no alarm system. I would think these will become few and far between as time goes on and Building codes become stricter.
Lasers without smoke are not nearly as effective so part of the time your light show may look fairly unimpressive. The suggested LED based lights would be a far better bet. If you realy want to use a smoke system then they look very effective and some can look very "Laser like". The advantages are that they can also look good without smoke, have no safety issues and cost wise could give you a more comprehensive show for less cash :-D
Keep an eye out for some of the Package Deals on offer from the larger online retailers. You can get allot for a little and some Packages come with handy controllers too.
DJ Rude has done loads of Youtube vids on LED lighting kit so perhaps a look at them would give you some more ideas.

Completely agree. If you do a party/wedding/show outdoors, then you can use all the fog you want. ;)
