Topic: How to utilize VDJ Samplers on the fly

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Experts of VDJ sampler, kindly give me some tips and workflow on how you use the samplers on the fly.

I played around the samplers, I think they have great potentials for creative gigs but still I am not very used to them.

I have the following issues:

1. Volume : What volume level should I set when record and then what volume to play, seems not same and automatic
2. Timing, timing of start of record. Then start to play (pressing Fn keys) not very sync with the play track.
3. Number of beats: how to record 16 beats loop

I have more but would be happy to know the above few first.

Thanks

Best Regards,

1) gain should be at 12 o'clock if you are recording internally within VDJ. how loud you play em depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

2-3) has the same answer: Depends on what you are trying to accomplish. There are a million and one variables. You would use the sampler as you need it to make your mix or remix sound good be it the use of acapellas, loops, drums, synths, etc. This is where YOUR creativity comes into play.

Thank you xcakid for your reply, gain should be 12 o'clock, I will try that when get home. Thanks again!

All vdj lovers, more tips are welcome please!

The gain of VDJ doesn't matter.. The samples are recorded from the source of the samples so retain the original gain independent of VDJ. If you want level samples you need to use a program like mp3Gain to normalize and limit all the sounds before you sample them.

If you are using existing songs or producer sample packs you need to record them into the VDJ format before you use them properly. To do this you can find the sample in your library and load it onto any deck..

Next you need to set the beatgrid of the sample. To do this you can right click the bpm button which will bring up a window where you can enter and modify the bpm and beatgrid information manually.

Once the beatgrid has been set successfully you need to loop the track for as long as the sample you want to record will be, you can correct the size and position of the loop with the controls on the skin, then press record on the selected sample slot (the track doesn't have to be playing).

The last step is to save the sample you have just recorded as if you miss this step, the sample will be deleted when you exit the program.

When you are playing samples if you want them to sync up you need to be playing a track on any of the decks and make sure it is selected as the master. Then make sure you select 'looped', 'match pitch' and 'beatlock' in the sampler drop down menu. see below

This is so much hassle to go through. I do hope Atomix make it easier to use existing samples and loops in VDJ 8.

fingers crossed, especially since traktor just opened up the mapping of the remix decks today, and they work very simply and effectively.

Yup, I'm eagerly awaiting the first Launchpad mapping.

The Remix Decks are the only reason I bought Traktor. If that functionality had been in VDJ I wouldn't have bothered.

It's unfortunate having to use several different programs because the one you want to use can't do certain things...

If VDJ had Remix Decks and the ability to warp like Ableton Live, I could save some hard drive space!

I've been using Serato SL with my TT. To be honest, aside from my VDJ Radio broadcast, and when I do videos(last time was a bar I did in April) I rarely use VDJ now.

Oops, I got a bold tag in there somehow. Too late to edit now.

No prob ;-)

Chris Anson (DJ Homeboy) has done a load of short videos demonstrating various parts of VirtualDJ.

There's a demo included in this video of how to use the sampler;

Thank you very much synthet1c for your comprehensive review, it is very useful for me, thanks.

And thank you DJSoulman for the video, the channel is so good.
