As i read this thread i see there are alot of mad djs, mostly from the edm side. I dont get why anyone wouldnt enjoy just watching the djs perform. Ive been a fan of the show since season 1. i actually find it necessary, because everyone is not tuned into dmc battles they are not televised. And i agree with all three judges a dj must manipulates the turntables...what people try to do is remove the most important element in DJ the D = Disc. Technology has made it easy for anybody to call themselves DJs. But most new Djs dont understand the mix or the scratch enough to be DJs. Like some EDM djs cant mix hiphop/R&B because if they go beyond the 4 on the floor basis of EDM they train wreck.coming into the mix on the wrong count, not used to the song structure. I consider myself a dj because i can mix anything hiphop, house(edm), reggae/reggaeton, R&B/ClassicR&B,Salsa/merengue. Might touch some nerves but with out recognizing and embracing the original elements you are not true to the art. I will say u dont have to be good or champion material bt if you can only mix EDM you are limited. And if you can mix hiphop/R&B, EDM mixing is easy...

I read the thread...and it goes deeper, they are actually debating the skills of the djs....theres always the one or two wildout dudes...but i see the difference in topic in a room of Turntable djs and controller dominated Rooms....

When I was looking before it wouldn't show the episodes. I see them there now at work but will try again at home.

There were moments on the show, in past episodes where I kept thinking, exactly why is this person on this show? DJ Dime Piece, DJ Fly Guy (AKA DJ Cry Guy), DJ Homme ( he has made skills, on an iPad), DJ B Hen, DJ Tina T, and some other dude from Philly. These DJs were not on the same level as; DJ Chris Karns, DJ Jayceeoh, DJ Incrediboi, DJ Brian Dawes ( who got a raw deal), DJ Dynamix, and DJ Loczi. Then it hit me, it's TV and they added some of these "DJs" for drama which equals ratings. As a DJ I was not entertained by the drama.
The guess judges, some were true DJs and should have been invited to add some critique and some should have stayed at home. I would like to see them bring back a previous winner to sit and judge.
Just my 2 cents.

I 110 % agree with you. People tune it to all these shows for the drama not the music in this case.

People tune in to See skillz. We all can play tracks and keep the crowd happy but, Not everyone can Handle a Technics 1200 and bring it to life by playing it like a Instrument and make people dance. If the show was Just about playing one song at a time (Just Blending) Then anyone that can blend can Qualify. The show will be boring.

Loczi got sent home because he didn't do anything. He just played the track & Moved a few buttons and that's it. Anyone can play a track & move buttons. That's why they were told to play there remixed version and then bring it to life in there show case (Scratching, Use Cue Points, Effects, Etc Live). In The Master of the Mix show, If you don't follow there rules, They scratch your record. Loczi is More of a producer type (Premixed Intro Outro DJ) He has Skillz but Not as good as the final 3. Jay, Chriss & Incrediboi can be creative live without using premixed tracks. Loczi makes premixed tracks because bpm's are high and low where the other 3 can be creative by using the tempo and use cue points to manuever there way out into different tracks with higher or lower bpms.
i personally thought that incrediboi should of been maybe top 5 but in no way in hell top 3...in that challenge u speak of loczi did have a half ass show but did the most as far as remix...incrediboi on the other hand had the worst most bland redrum remix of that song...it showed in each challenge that he did the least of everyone and yet came away being the best....i only thing he lasted as long as he did cause he has a similar style to judge kid carpi...his "hiphop" style of cutting the music to talk and switch songs shouldnt of gotten him top 3. dynamix was 110 times better and should of been in that top 3

I loved the episodes. I have Estelle buzzing in my head for days now.... because I can.
The show was entertaining and educational. It has to be incredibly stressful to be handed creativity tasks like this and still come up with something that sounds good by the dedline. Congratulations to all the competitors.
I hope they have a new contest. Maybe I'd go audition. I'll represent the "true" old school. I was there. Hopefully my greying won't disqualify me. :)

@ AJbean. Loczi Produced a better version in Studio Yes But, He didn't complete the Challenge. If you don't follow the rules for That specific challenge, You don't move on. Incredibois Track wasn't as good as Loczi but, he completed the challenge to barely make it to the Top 3. You move on to the next challenge based on how well you did Now, Not because you did well in the past challenges.

Don't mind me. I'll be just taking a little nap before the big challenge.
No, I'm not dying my hair and beard to look younger. I'm proud to display my true age... because with it comes a wealth of knowledge and experience that can be ultimately used to my advantage in a competition.
The age discriminator's "drama and insults" cannot supersede valid acquired skills, creativity, and determination. They'll just be learning to give more respect to us "oldies" who know how all this started.
I've been around. My first "professional" turntable was a pair of Thornes TD 124s. The speed control was an act of engineering genius. Before this model came out DJ's would use a pack of matches to wedge into the platter to slow their tracks down.
Here is a picture of it.
http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.soundfountain.com/amb/124sebastianschiele800b.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.soundfountain.com/amb/td124page.html&h=492&w=800&sz=96&tbnid=2APYweXEfomajM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=146&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dthorens%2B124%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=thorens+124&usg=__HZV491SkYrXdwdzLR8pIvq6o_do=&docid=OYZSQtZNFQ2phM&sa=X&ei=RC65UfCKAorZ0wGN6IDQAw&ved=0CDEQ9QEwAA&dur=359
This Thornes is a combo rim & belt drive turntable. The main aluminum pulley had an internal moving piece of steel controlled by the speed knob. Outside was an adjustable magnet.
You set 33.3, 45, or 78 rpm by adjusting the moving steel and magnet clearances to get the orange strobe dots to stop moving. The trick was to get the pitch knob in the middle of the range. Turing the knob puts more or less drag on the platter.
Indeed it was it an act of engineering genius to use "DJ controlled" change in magnetic force to adjust RPM. I still have a pair from 1978. They have the "modified" tone arms. It was the hot ticket for DJing back then.
Anyway...I can't see the judges on National TV saying "Well Jimmy ??? your track was a killer, your scratching was quite unique, your choice, and execution of effects... SMOKIN' !!!, but sorry these other DJ's are just younger.. your record has been scratched".
Alright ! Where do I sign up?
And did you say there was a pillow over there? :)

Thanks Joey for the postitive wishes. I'll post with progress.
Right now I'm in studio mode getting control over a ton of newly purchased loops. I'll have to get Ableton up and running perhaps with a nice pad controller.
It's amazing what creativity tools we have right now. I see a lot of work ahead to be a producer of something meaningful. One thing I promise is to create uplifting music.
Still have DJ JayCeeOh's Estelle mix rolling through my head. I really like what he did.

i have never watched the show but i got a feeling its terrible because its for TV and for tv you need to sell and if you need to sell you need to put what people want.. and people usually want stupid dumb ass things like..jersey shore, big brother, survivor and stuff like that. so... dose it shine on DJ community ah ill rather go to the clubs :)

I see your point and admitted he was not the best DJ there. BUT the challenge was based around remixing the track, then adding flare to playing it live. They said "you didn't touch the turn tables" and that is why he failed. I understand that his live flare was not there and maybe he could done that differently.
My point was I whole heartedly disagree with the decision because he had the best remix. I just don't see his studio mixed approach as a failure as he was able to do turn table tricks in other challenges. This was just his approach on this one challenge.
I am not an EDM guy either or defending that. I mix everything possible in my sets, Hip Hop, Reggeaton, Old Skool, Disco, etc. He was able to scratch and mix other genres too. Maybe not to the level of the others (as admitted) but he was able to. That was my point... He moved the people more than the others. I just refuse to believe that one thing on that one challenge was that important.

Being an old school DJ from the Bronx, I am a big fan of Turntablism. However, the show did not showcase a complete DJ. I enjoyed many of the DJ's with different and unique styles on the show but the judges focused on Turntablism skills. Many of my DJ friends, who were Turntablists, rarely get work, whereas, a EDM DJ will get work. A DJ has to be able to mix a various style of music, along with a touch of Turntablism using various tools. For the record, I am a big fan of Kid Capri but I am highly critical of his judgment on the show.
Posted Wed 19 Jun 13 @ 2:15 pm
Thank you, I agree with just about everything you just said. I am glad that some Turntablists can be objective & not look down their nose at every other style of DJing. That is one of the reasons I don't often participate around here, though I am sure some of you have seen me speak up on this topic. I feel very strongly that your Patrons and them dancing / having a good time should be number 1.
Most of us don't play concerts, so people are not often coming to see us show off. So TT tricks is not high on my priority list. The lucky ones that do play concerts, great, do your thing. I just mostly disagree with Turntablists saying the "you are not a real DJ if..." could be scratch, sync button, etc.
I don't use an iPod in my show, I am all digital, TONS of video, DMX Lights, I have $45 k invested and I play to my crowd. I can't scratch (yet) and beat match everything that I can and when I use the sync button it has almost never synced anything automatically other than straight BPM. I still press play and use my ears to line things up in my headphones. And yes, I do like to use the Waves as it helps when people want to talk to me, which is often the case in a 300 person show where everyone wants a song (or many songs). I am often more busy getting songs and arranging my set to make some kind of sense. I just can't ever pre-stage most of my set before I get there. Which is what this show, showed me. They gave them all kinds of time to do whatever they want. I don't have that luxury in the live shows I play, it is always different and I work very hard on final presentation of my sets. These are things that a real DJ does do!
Sorry for the small rant, I just feel that a degree of respect should be given around here to those who are here and trying to learn. Most are not here because we are the cheap, unprofessional "iPod DJs". I have never had a patron come up and say "gee, I wish you did more turn table tricks" or "you were very boring to watch". Mostly because they are too busy dancing with a partner. I think it might actually feel creepy with all eyes on me! :)
