Hello all,
I have downloaded the free version of Virtual DJ so that I can pass a bit of time with my grandchildren. I have tried everything I possibly could to have lyrics appear on our HD television set.
Any help would be very appreciated. Many thanks guys.

You will need to have actual karaoke files for the lyrics to appear. You cannot add lyrics to just any song.
You can buy karaoke CD's and then use special software to rip them to your computer so that you can retain the lyrics that come with it.
There is plenty of help and advice on these forums and in the Wiki to help you get started not only with Virtual DJ but also setting up for karaoke. Just search ;-)

Please also bear in mind that VirtualDJ Home FREE is free limited software and doesn't support full-screen video and karaoke. It's limited to a small video output window only. The full VirtualDJ Pro is required for full-screen video and karaoke: http://www.virtualdj.com/buy/index.html
If you are just using it for fun at home then you could use WinAmp with its free karaoke plugin instead.
You will of course need proper karaoke files with accompanying lyrics (Standard MP3+G format or video karaoke.)
Regardless of which software you use, you will also need to configure your computer correctly for dual-screen output - Please see http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/How%20do%20I%20output%20video%20or%20karaoke%20to%20a%20TV%20or%20projector.html
