Topic: How do you keep your laptop from going south?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I recently had to take my laptop in and had it have some work done to it after it went south on me during a gig I ended up finishing up the party off an iPod connection to the NS6 . I googled the problem and it came back as what they call a swollen battery, it's a 2011 Mac pro.(thank god for the 3yr accident protection warranty so you know I'm going to break this bitch before thats up.LOL) wanted to know from some of you techs out their? what are some of your ways from this happing again? I do use my laptop to download numerous hours longest I have done is 2 days of new content between me and telling my wife what to press to download.

Thanks in advance

It has to do with Leaving it on alot, and always having the plug connected and not giving your battery a chance to recycle. I use my laptop strickly for DJ use and nothing else. I never leave the laptop on for so many hours pluged in just sitting on my desk. When i am not using my Mac, I have the power cord disconected also.

I leave the lappy on or (plugged in) 100 % of the time. When not in use, it's in sleep mode. Two things to remember here though..... Do a FULL shutdown and a reboot at least every 24 hrs. Running constantly, after awhile, even the best O.S. has a tendency to become less stable and any number of problems arise..... Secondly, when a lappy is plugged in, the BATTERY IS OUT!...Constantly running the battery in "charge mode," (which being plugged in while the battery is plugged in as well does), it drastically shortens the battery's life. Lappy batteries need to be "exercised." This means running them until they are nearly drained on a regular basis and then charging them back up, and then REMOVING them until they are needed. Leaving a battery 100% charged and never draining it is bad for them as well......Hope this helps. I have no idea why ppl. are never told this. I assume it is so more 200$ batteries can be sold......lolol.....I don't fool with Macs, but sounds like you just need to purchase another battery and I would recommend a second, new battery for backup as well. In case you run into the same issues again....

Thanks for the advice!!! Sounds like I'll have to use the battery more often cuz I keep
It pluged in 90% of the time when in use. But it's good now they had the parts in stock they gave me a brand new battery and a new track pad( mouse pad). I just don't want it going south on me again during a gig do you think I should invest in a Laptop fan? I have a 100% warranty for 4 years including accidental damage. So I can poor water on it and it would be replaced with a new one. That's why I mentioned when my warranty is abut up I'm going to have my 2yr old now have some fun with it!!! LOL

I use my laptop for DJ'ing ONLY!!!

Downloads is done on another laptop or on my desktop. I then transfer it to an extern HD, which is also my back up, then I transfer to my DJing laptop.
I drain the battery on my laptop every so often. This is good for the battery life.
I optimized the laptop so that I do not have clutter on it that can drain resources and affect performance. I basically just have my DJing software on there and a few that came with the laptop.
If doing a mobile gig I use a separate laptop to download music on the fly that I don't have. This also doubles as my back up laptop just in case the other goes tits up.

In a perfect world I would have the $$ for a lappy in every room of my house, but it is not practical for us guys that are more "hobbyists," than DJ's out gigging for a living......If the PC is TAKEN CARE of properly with scans, malware removals, de fragmenting, disk cleanups and the non essential services terminated prior to DJing with them, there IS NO LOSS OF PERFORMANCE.....at least in my experience.............

.....and yes a laptop fan is good to have in a club environment. Clubs can be much hotter and humidity levels MUCH higher than your home practice space...So a fan couldn't hurt......Glad I could be of some help.......and remember boys: Exercise those batteries, then TAKE EM OUT!!.....lolol
