Hello folks,
I'm planning to buy the new Retina Macbook Pro in the next weeks. Are there any plans to upgrade VDJ software to match the stunning graphics of 2880x1900 pixels?
Thanks a lot,

I could easily make a retina display version of my Condensed skin, although I don't know what would be involved on VirtualDJ's end to actually support that. I suspect that my hands as a skin developer are tied until VirtualDJ actually properly implements support for this. Any chances of a patch to add this support to VDJ?
(Granted, I don't actually have a new Retina MacBook to test with at the moment...)

The whole retina hype is so funny it kills me.. ppl really going to shelve out 2K+ on a rig which need most of its power just to keep it's screen updated. For our purpose, performing a DJ set, it has absolutely no added value and is a waste of money. For half that money you buy a very solid dedicated system for just running VDJ which IMO is a much better investment..

Exactly, and 256gb of flash memory is not nearly enough.
You are much better off buying the old style macbook pro

I have 2 windows 7 laptops at present, one with 1920x1080 and one with 1366x768.
For the purpose of using VDJ then the 1920x is a bit better, but to be honest the same skin in 1366x is perfectly adequate and gives all the information I need.
The money they are asking for the Retina Macbook is simply insane, one of the machines I have is a Sony Vaio SE with 256GB SSD and similar spec and it cost less than half the price.

I wouldn't say that high resolution displays are a gimmick, they are the future. Unfortunately, until now, nobody seems to have implemented an elegant solution for handling really high resolution displays. Of course at the moment there will be a price premium, but it should only be a couple of years before we can expect all PCs to ship with comparably high resolution displays.
There is a reason that I created Condensed with resolution-independence in mind -- I could see this kind of thing coming from a million miles away, although it took a lot longer than expected. The native size of Condensed would actually be suitable for a 30" pixel doubled retina display, and it scales down nicely to nearly any other size.
Back in 2009 I remember reading a Microsoft primer on creating applications that were resolution independent... but nobody actually made hardware that could really required anyone to do this. Until now.
Once you actually use a screen like that, it's pretty hard to go back. Everything looks smoother and more crisp and more precise. Also, unless you're rendering 3D graphics, the actual processing power and memory required by the graphics adapter to display 2D graphics at 2800x1800 is fairly negligible. The actual electrical power required to power a screen like that is higher, however, hence why the Retina MacBook Pro has so much in the way of batteries.
Anyways, the point is that this isn't something that can be dismissed -- it is clearly the future -- and Virtual DJ (as well as almost all other software) should make haste in supporting this stuff.

VDJ 8 (as was mentioned in the preview I believe) will use a new graphics method which is completely scalable.

So it's been 6 months since the 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display was announced and so far I've not come across any laptops with nearly as high a resolution. Well except one, the 13" MacBook Pro with Retina Display.
I'm not saying we need it as DJ's but I do like the entirely solid state design and construction of it, hence why I've just replaced my existing Mac with a 15" Retina and 768GB solid state drive. Should arrive tomorrow.
Now really looking forward to version 8.

couldnt agree more and on a 15 inch screen from normal distance you will never see a pixel on a 1080 screen,Why spend more on a visual upgrade you cant see? now if we are talking a 60 inch TV different story, retna is the future in that arena.

I still have my 2010 Macbook pro with 2.2 Ghz i7 Quad core with 16 gigs of Ram and a 1 gig Radeon 6750 Video Card & a Solid State HD. No need for a new Macbook pro with a Retina display.

those are impressive specs for 2010

If memory serves me right, Apple didn't introduce the radeon cards into their macbooks until 2011.
2010 models had geforce gt cards in them.

To those who claim that the retina display is a gimmick - you clearly haven't actually used one. They make everything so easy on the eyes and so clear. The worst problem is that IMO, the graphics acceleration required to drive so many pixels consistently smoothly isn't quite here yet, especially Intel's integrated chipset.
Yes, the rMBP is an expensive machine but that's not because of the display so much as for the fact that you need to buy it with a ton of solid-state storage which is currently quite expensive. I've used one and would agree with the plethora of reviewers out there who say that they are the nicest notebook on the market right now, but for me, I'd rather spend less on an old school MacBook Pro that I can upgrade by swapping out the optical dive for a second hard drive, add in my own inexpensive SSD and RAM upgrade, etc.
I do hate that Apple goes to great measures to prevent people from being able to upgrade the rMBP. For most people it doesn't really matter, but for me that's kind of a dealbreaker.
Anyways, all the haters in this thread have quickly lost track of the point of it: Virtual DJ should enable support for high resolution modes to make the most of modern hardware. Currently this applies to MacOS because there isn't really a high-dpi mode for Windows, but in time high-dpi displays will come from other PC vendors too, and it would be good for VDJ to work properly on that as well.
A major pain point with VDJ has always been that its skins are frustratingly a fixed resolution requiring one to basically become a skin designer if they own a PC with a strange resolution and expect VDJ to look and work perfectly on it. I had to go through great pains to make the Condensed skin work on all known common resolutions.
Let's hope that with VDJ 8 we see a more elegant UI and skin design that puts an end to this kludginess.

I find it easy being able to Make changes on My Macbook pro. I changed my HD before. I used to have a western Digital Scorpian Black 320 Gig HD that was 7200 rpm. Now i have a Corsair Solid State HD with 256 Gigs. The ram i upgraded from 4 to 8 & Now 16 gigs. Apple store charges alot of money to make upgrades and thats why i do it myself.. Basic things like change the HD or Ram, New OS etc.

Unfortunately Apple's new Retina MacBook Pros are an entirely different story. IF you happen to have the right, rare pentalobe screwdriver, you can take the bottom panel off and swap out their proprietary SSD with another exactly like it. I think Other World Computing is the only place you can buy them, (excepting used OEM parts) and they aren't really cheaper than just buying them from Apple anyways. That is literally the only upgrade that can be made to that machine unless you're talking about adding an external accessory through Thunderbolt or USB.
